Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 09, 2011 7:38 pm Our fridge is 790w and the one I would perhaps like to change to one day is 900 wide. My fridge is only 2 years old so I doubt we will be getting rid of it anytime soon. Is there a standard sort of width people go with? I'm not sure if I should make my fridge fit nice or leave space for something bigger Re: How wide is your fridge cavity? 2Feb 09, 2011 7:49 pm Our's is 1500mm wide. Our fridge is 790mm wide at the moment, so it looks a bit empty, but we wanted the option to upgrade to a french door fridge in a few years. Our fridge is 790mm wide at the moment, so it looks a bit empty, but we wanted the option to upgrade to a french door fridge in a few years. we went for 1000mm, most double door fridges are 900mm but as with any electrical decive - heat is what kills things so having an extra gap around the fridge will help the heat exchanger Re: How wide is your fridge cavity? 5Feb 10, 2011 2:24 pm 900mm seems to be the standard width size for fridge cavitys in new homes. My house runs the the standard 900mm. The biggest fridge you can fit(with 900mm) is a 590-610 litre from memory(890-895mm wide)but thats still a big fridge mind you. edit After kitchen was installed and architrave`s have been completed,my fridge space comes in at 870mm wide at base and 1790mm high.
Re: How wide is your fridge cavity? 6Feb 10, 2011 3:17 pm Depends where you are building. In WA with double brick ( no wooden frame ) a 900 mm cavity when plastered and then white setted and then painted is no longer 900 mm . An 885 mm wide fridge will not fit as the gap is now 880mm or less. Plus a fridge needs to breathe ( space behind and down both sides ) so 1000mm is better if you have the space. I have never seen a fridge that is big enough, only fridges that dont have enough food or beer / wine / spirits in them. We have a pigeon pair, and on the plans the cavity was tiny, so we made it wider. I don't understand these big houses that have tiny fridge spaces as it's not often there are only 1 or 2 people living in them. You've also got to think about whether you have skirtings or not. My sister bought a unit off the plans fully finished and she measured the space for a fridge, went and bought one and it didn't fit because of the skirtings. She ripped them out, but it made a mess of it. Re: How wide is your fridge cavity? 9Feb 10, 2011 4:49 pm It’s important to think about these things at plan stage. If you know OR think you may want another fridge later on down the track make allowances for it before you start to build. Down the track is not a good option to decide on a bigger fridge, the mucking around to increase that space in your kitchen is painful to think about. But fear not we have a plan for that space. Our fr/fz is 1100mm and we are going to have a desk next to it where I will have my laptop and recipe books in shelves above..... I decided on this size after checking out the types of fridges I wanted, the size and required air space around them. I want a side by side refridgerator, so I made the space 1 metre. This will allow me to fit in a 600 litre side by side fridge. However, it won't fit in the larger 700 litre fridge, but that is too big for me. I thought about making it smaller for awhile as the fridges I like are ~900mmW and I wanted it to be flush. Then DH said he wanted a pigeon pair frdige. So I left it. I found Appliancesonline.com.au good for checking the width of different fridges.... and checking out the price. If you print that page and take it into the Harvey or the Good guys they match it.... if its cheaper of course. But that is whole other story LOL Some things are worth waiting for. Re: How wide is your fridge cavity? 19Feb 12, 2011 5:46 am The other thing to think about is the depth of the cavity. Some larger fridges don't get wider, they get deeper. I think our space is around 1050mm wide but is only 600mm deep. Re: How wide is your fridge cavity? 20Feb 12, 2011 6:26 am Echo I have never seen a fridge that is big enough, only fridges that dont have enough food or beer / wine / spirits in them. I'm very positive yours is filled with wine Echo. Our cavity is 1400mm wide. We have a side by side in there and yes, there's a space on the side but we're probably going to fill it with a custom made cupboard. Was originally thinking about purchasing the french door fridge but changed mind. Anyway, for whatever reason if I ever needed the space again I can just rip out the cupboards.
