Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 07, 2011 9:39 am Hi all, In a brick veneer house - is the purpose of wall studs mainly to give you something to hang the gyprock on? I ask because between my laundry door and perpendicular wall I have a 70cm stretch of wall in which I would like to put a dog door - I've marked it in red in the pic I am 90% confident that the cut out for the dog door will fit between the studs - but if it doesn't - would it be safe to remove the stud? (In case you're wondering why we aren't putting a dog door in the door itself - toughened glass in the glazed door - can't be cut, can be replaced for about $600 then CrimSafe screen door on the outside - another $300 to put a door in it. A door in the brick wall will cost me about $200 and a case of beer for a brickie to cut the hole in the wall) After 4 years - we're in! Re: Wall stud question 2Feb 07, 2011 10:12 am I woudn't cut the stud. If your house is single level, it helps to support the roof structure - even though in this case it seems to be spaced at 35cm - however, it still supports the noggings and has its purpose to support the load. Anyway, can your doggie fit into a small door, eg. 30cm only? You could fit that in between the studs, only a tiny bit narrower than what you've drawn. BTW, where did you find a brickie that would do this virtually for free??? (beer doesn't count with any of our traders, it's on top of a hefty fee). It's a 2 storey brick and the wall just goes straight up with no change in materials. Lex - we're in a new estate and one of the first houses to finish - so now there's plenty of construction! I just walked around one afternoon and asked at a few job sites. $300 if we needed to call someone in. B STAR - nice idea about reinforcement above the door. I should be able to get it in without any hassles. Most of the dog doors we're looking at require a 24cm wide or less hole - so I should be safe - was just contingency planning! After 4 years - we're in! Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that. Have a good day 4 5108 thank you! do we need to get this or our builder before we commence new build on the block? 2 10260 You can really use anything you want the main consideration would be how it looks once painted/finished - or the look you want. Cabinetmakers use MDF because its cheap… 2 9900 |
