Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Our build - back on track.... 41Nov 13, 2011 7:54 pm Finally we've settled on and confirmed our kitchen appliances. We were going to have a 90cm free standing smeg cooker/oven but having seen my step-mum's Ilve in action, decided against it as the oven just seems to take forever to heat up. Plus, we were given an induction cooktop demo and were blown away by the speed of it (having previously said oh no, we're gas people for sure). SO - we are going electrolux maxisense hob with their e-line pyrolytic oven (no more mr muscle - hooray ) and a combined microwave/oven so we have additional oven space for those rare times we need more oven space (Christmas, dinner parties). Fisher and Paykel 90cm canopy rangehood (dont know what it is called, v slimline though with black facsia). Will match everything with the eline side by side fridge/freezer with ice water eventually - but will see how the finances are a little later on before we buy that. Miele semi-integrated dishwasher, Franke pyra mixer tap and Epure double bowl undermount. the only thing we are yet to finalize is the wine fridge.....I've wanted one for ages, but pulled back on it due to finances....but think we should bite the bullet. BTW - something v interesting to note is that Whitfords of five dock came in $1,500 cheaper than Winning appliances on the ovens, cooktop and rangehood package - pretty competitive. So just tiles, flooring and wine fridge to decide. And landscaping to sort....that one scares the hell out of me Build Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43846 Re: Our build - back on track.... 42Nov 13, 2011 8:48 pm Hey Nina, I too wanted a free standing cooker, because of the oven space, but you reckon it takes awhile to heat up? hmmm, never really thought of that, thanks for mentioning that, will look into it. Also, haven't heard of whiteford at Five Dock, but will check it out as we thought Winning Appliances were the cheapest? As for the tiling, there's a couple of places at Smithfield, they have really good quality tiles for outdoor & indoor. One is called Tile Factory Outlet & the other is Tile Megamart . Their prices are very competitive, & they are worth checking out. Re: Our build - back on track.... 43Nov 13, 2011 9:03 pm Oh I havent heard of Whitfords either, another trip on the books, we went to designer homewares at Chatswood, which were good but didn't stock everything we wanted, a little cheaper than Winnings, made me look at V-Zug but think will go the Siemens or Miele, good idea about the combi microwave, having the xtra oven when need be We are also thinking about a wine fridge, but they are very expensive because only a couple can be built in, but they look nice Did you get the dishwasher that has the cutlery drawer that slides? As for the whole gas/induction cooktop, I would be happy with the induction but unfortunately my DH is a plumber by trade that has worked for the gas company for 25 years, so is stubborn as an ox, and wont budge, gas is best blah blah... Re: Our build - back on track.... 44Nov 15, 2011 6:37 am Hi Nina Thought I'd catch up on your thread too! Looks like you're not far behind us - with our slowcoach builders I'm sure you'll be racing past us before Xmas. Our builder used to work for Hotondo - I've heard only good things about them. Enjoy slab-week! Re: Our build - back on track.... 45Nov 15, 2011 8:48 am oh wow!!! That is wonderful news Nina! And I also totally understand the feeling of wanting to cry after all the delays you have had. It must be so much harder for others part way through their build too (like springtime). Sorry I haven't had a chance to get back to you on your questions early about selections etc. Crazy 2 weeks this end (but can't complain as DH and I had a lovely 4 day trip to Tassie in between), but consequence is work and catching up with house stuff is all a bit crazy! Just so pleased for you. What would we do in that situation - would they also install them? Maybe check out the 90cm oven thing, it could just be my step-mum's that is the problem. It takes over an hour to get really hot and is hopeless for Yorkshire puddings (which need a super hot oven)! Whitfords might suit some of you, it depends what brands you are looking at. They have just extended and had some very pricey gagganau ovens on show as well as neff, but they don't have anywhere near as many as winning have on show. They also have a factory seconds department where you can get some amazing deals...a second could just be an oven that doesn't have it's packaging. Gogo - yep, dishwasher with cutlery drawer that can move around depending on the size of your wine glasses! I hope you are going to make DH clean the gas hob if he is insisting on it?! Looking forward to just wiping over the induction! Think I have talked myself out of the wine fridge, am getting a little worried about money (especially with unknown landscaping keeping me awake at night). Hi BNA - thanks for the good words on Hotondo, always nice to hear. Let's hope we both have a good run before Christmas. And T - thanks so much! Glad you had a lovely time in Tassie and without kiddies, how lovely! Our little man turned 1 on the weekend - can you believe it?!! A weekend away would be blisssssssssss, or even just having DH back helping out would be great right now - only a week and a half to go. Day off today, so might go and spy on those concreters and see what is happening. I popped by on Monday and they hadn't progressed that far with the form work (which I imagine will have to be quite extensive given we have some huge drop edge beams) Build Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43846 Re: Our build - back on track.... 47Nov 16, 2011 7:00 am nina marie And T - thanks so much! Wow - and I remember when you were still pregnant. (Funny how H1 works! ) I took another peek at your piering pics this morning. Lovely outlook you will have onto your back yard with all those trees. Does look like some serious dropped edge beams to go in along the side. All in good time... BNA - meeting your landscapers out there next Wednesday will report back. Thanks for the recommendation! T, yes, we love the bush outlook. Need to figure out how we screen the next-door house off a bit if possible...can't have everything thou I suppose. I am excited for you!!! Especially knowing the journey you have been on to get here. I totally understand you feeling cynical before driving past (not wanting to set yourself up for disappointment). And boy, yep, that is a scary photo of the waffle slab (is that it?) perched on the end there. From the photos I can see another house close behind - are you in a back block behind another house or something? Congratulations again!! You must be so relieved. What sort of build time have Hontondo estimated? When we bought the land there was just a little fibro cottage on the plot behind us. Little did we know they had plans approved to build this monstrosity of a duplex on it. Something our lawyer should have found for us? Anyway, it is what it is. So the front of our house is away from the street and all the living area is out the back backing on to the national park so we don't have to look at the sardine tins (seriously, how this duplex ever got approved I do not know. Long, narrow, tiny living areas and no communal bathroom or loo and tiny amount of garden as ratio to living area). Hotondo's contract is 6 months once slab is laid, excluding Xmas closure. frames won't go up until Jan and I'm not even sure drainage will get done before Xmas now, we'll see - they we hoping to but I think the form work is taking longer than they expected. Build Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43846 Re: Our build - back on track.... 52Nov 20, 2011 8:04 pm And T - THANK YOU!!! (intrigued about these tiles you have fallen in love with - any piccies?) Build Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43846 Re: Our build - back on track.... 53Nov 21, 2011 5:59 am Congrats Nina ! That IS great progress! I can understand your cynicism though, you were probably use to the " lack of " progress of another builder who's name we won't mention anymore as it makes my blood boil. But seriously, it's all coming together now isn't it. Best of luck Nina, & pls keep posting pics, I will be interested to see the house coming up especially on the edge, but you know what, I guess that's what you call living on edge Re: Our build - back on track.... 54Nov 21, 2011 7:27 am Wow, that's quite a slab! Don't worry about being scared about it staying on the rock... I'm sure the builders' know what they're doing (at least, that's what we all hope as we go through this stage Great progress Re: Our build - back on track.... 55Nov 23, 2011 7:46 pm springtime I guess that's what you call living on edge ha ha so true!! Living on the edge. Something I think we all do building these houses - some more than others. And in Nina's case, literally! ps: yeah, the tiles were just amazing. Beautiful granite - grey with lovely stone swirls, 600x600. My friend bought them from a tiler in Weatherill (sp?) Park for $69 a sqm. I am totally following up on them. Sadly I didn't have my camera at the time, but if you are interested I can send you the tiler's details. I am planning on calling them in the next day or so...
