Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Our build- back on track..finishing touches, little by l 2021Nov 28, 2012 8:57 am NIna, I love your awning too its great. We get a lot of sun/heat in the late afternoon through the big sliders & windows too & I got some cheap blinds from spotlight. The selection was crap & they only had the 6 sizes I needed in black but got them anyway thinking they will just be temporary until the pergola is built & has something growing on it. After putting them up I really love the look of them & love the black, we have the black splashback & the window frames are black (monument) We have internet now so I must get some photos up on the Zen forum. DH has been back for only one night then away again for another week, when he gets back we will hang all our pictures & more blinds/curtains & take photos of the finished rooms. Some of your photos on the previous page (100) the ones with the shutters, for me, wont show up, I just get a big black band with white circles on, does anyone know how I can open these? I really want to see them, others after are fine. Re: Our build- back on track..finishing touches, little by l 2022Nov 28, 2012 12:02 pm hello Ryan!! I was wondering how you were going. Sorry can't help with the photo viewing question. But really looking forward to seeing some of your photos on the Zen thread. As for the heat in the windows - are your windows north or west? I vaguely remember west? Ours are north which was hot a few months ago, but now that we are getting in to summer (and the sun is more overhead) the sun is fine (as DH designed the 900mm eaves above to block out the sun in summer but to come in during winter). But this is only possible because we are upstairs with eaves, for downstairs living like nina's and yours with no roof over it looks like awnings do the trick! Also have a split system to come but want to use it as little as possible, & of course the pergola along the west wall, if DH ever gets home long enough to build it! Just loving being in the house, now that things have settled down a bit, all the unpacking cleaning old place etc, a few teething problems & it seems almost everyday something new, gutterguard, clothes line, letter box, the other day, topsoil yesterday, fly screens today hopefully. Quite a bit of painting still to do, the bathrooms need ceilings done & the dark grout on b room floors has a lot of plaster dust making the grout look white, as there is still sanding etc to be done I have not made much effort to shift it but did you find this a problem? Re: Our build- back on track..nervous 2030Jan 07, 2013 7:43 pm So much to update you with, but never seem to have the time to sit down and focus on it. For now just a note to say how nervous I am feeling about tomorrow and the threat of bushfire. Managed to get DS into daycare for tomorrow so DD and I will go hang at a shopping centre I think. Never really fully considered just how at risk we are here until now. Hope you all stay safe and cool tomorrow. Imagine if tonight was your last night on earth??? I wonder what we would do if we knew that!!!??? Prob lucky we don't. Anyway, good luck everyone. Stay safe and I hope your homes remain safe as well. Re: Our build- back on track..nervous 2032Jan 07, 2013 8:03 pm I feel the same Nina, wondered about hanging out at the shops. I am taking grandaughter to one of those reptile shows at the mall & thought about just staying, or going to daughters apartment but it would mean leaving the dogs & cat. So will go back after the show, keep my eyes on the horizon. Re: Our build- back on track..nervous 2033Jan 07, 2013 8:17 pm I'm planning taking the family to the movies tomorrow and spending as much time as I can at the shopping centre before and afterwards too. I think most of Sydney will be at the shops tomorrow. Re: Our build- back on track..nervous 2034Jan 08, 2013 8:35 pm Hey Ryan and nerak, how'd you go today? We spent all morning and half the arvo at the mall then went to a friend's (who has ac of course). Back home in the sauna now. Kiwi, my last night last night would have been very boring and spent sleeping - was bl@@dy knackered! Build Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43846 Re: Our build- back on track..nervous 2035Jan 08, 2013 8:54 pm We didn't make it to the mall after all. After buying tickets online for the movie, my daughter suddenly felt sick so we stayed at home. Still have the air con going at 9.54pm - it's a very old system so not the most effective. It's supposed to be 35c outside. Hope the cool change comes through soon. Re: Our build- back on track..nervous 2036Jan 08, 2013 9:06 pm Nina I thought when you built you wrote about some ducting, have you made provision to do it later? What direction do your big downstairs windows & doors face? Ours is west & after about 3 oclock today even with the blinds down & fans on it was a bit warm, not really bad but would certainly be running the air con if it was installed, was supposed to be in first week of January. Our solar panels were turned on today so that was great we have been hassling for this for a long time, not Zen, our own subcontractor. Re: Our build- back on track..nervous 2037Jan 08, 2013 9:21 pm Oh at least you have ac nerak. Hope DD not too poorly? Yes Ryan, we ducted but can't afford the unit yet!!!! Our big windows are north east as is our bedroom. Naturally upstairs worse than down. Fridge says it is 34 degrees indoors at the mo. I think it is a couple of degrees out compared with another thermometer I have. But still, that's hot! If we put more insulation in the roof won't it just keep the heat in more in the summer as well as the winter....? Good news on the solar panels, that's exciting. Wish we'd done that too, but again - budget doesn't stretch to everything. We are the best of friends and she gets a workout at least once a day, if not twice. I read about her family on the forum months and months ago and mentioned it to my family back then. They remembered god bless 'em, I had a tear in my eye when I opened that present! Highly recommended if you haven't got one and don't have time to Hoover or sweep every day (and have pets or children that create mess galore).
