Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 13, 2007 9:14 pm Hi Everyone,
This is my first post. I have been reading this forum for sometime now, it's a great resource and I only wish that I had found it sooner. We are building a project home on the outskirts of Brisbane. Everything has been going very smoothly up til now but we went out to the house the other day and were/still are somewhat disappointed/unsatisfied with the quality of the brickwork. We'd love for you to have a look at the photos and let us know whether our concerns are justified or whether we're being r-e-a-l-l-y picky! Sorry for the mass amount of photos - just want to give you a good idea. (This is also my first time at posting photos, so I really hope they work!) Thanks for your help. http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_100_2079.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_100_2083.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_100_2075.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_100_2074.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_100_2069.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_100_2064.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks017.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks016.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks015.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks014.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks013.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks012.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks011.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks010.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks009.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks008.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks007.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks006.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks005.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks004.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks003.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks002.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/th_Bricks001.jpg Re: Opinion on Brickwork 2Dec 13, 2007 9:46 pm With the exception of the bricks around the pipework, looks ok to me.
Don't expect consistency of mortar thickness or perfectly straight lines. You can take it up with your buider but I think you are getting stressed over something you will have forgotten about once you move in. Every time I have built, I have been unhappy with the brickwork but down the track, I think what was all the fuss about. How many times have you really paid attention to a friends brickwork? Re: Opinion on Brickwork 3Dec 13, 2007 9:52 pm Thanks for your reply. We will be bringing the bricks around the pipework to their attention. They have already fixed quite a lot of their work up without us having to say too much.
You're right, I'll probably never even think about it after we move in but bricks are on the brain at the moment! Re: Opinion on Brickwork 5Dec 13, 2007 10:25 pm I think most of it is OK or can be readily fixed up. I would definetly ask then to spurce it up a bit in places.
However, what's with the pipes and the brickwork around the pipes. You could make it uglier, but you would really have to try. I would get some sort of enclosure bult around the pipes, perhaps using the same bricks. It'll be money well spent and will give you piece of mind. Re: Opinion on Brickwork 7Dec 14, 2007 12:01 pm Have to disagree with the brickwork being OK here!
The fall back towards the house (in the pic with the spirit level) is completely unacceptable. http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/100_2064.jpg The overall shot shows the brickwork to have some areas where the brickwork has discolourations... http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/vegemitesandwiches/Bricks017.jpg I think there are also some other issues there in regards to the laying of the bricks that would need looking at also. ie the bricks to close in the pillar (not enough mortar, could be out of level too) Definately get it checked by an expert... Re: Opinion on Brickwork 8Dec 14, 2007 12:08 pm In that same shot with the spirit level, it also shows that the brick on the right (under the door), is a different size to the other.
I wouldn't be happy with some of these things (bricks around the pipes etc). I'd certainly be insisting on getting the obvious ones sorted out. Cheers Re: Opinion on Brickwork 10Dec 14, 2007 2:09 pm get an independanrt inspector the slab rebate in the photo with diffrent size bricks looks to small
the slab rebate normally has enough room for a brick layed as per norm and a brick on its side all slabs i have done this is the norm but looks like they have cut bricks down the length to suit , this migth be there design though? also looks like they used standard gp cement for mortar with a probably 4-1 ratio white brick sand looks really grey, is this the type of mortar you picked? as previously stated the fall back is unacceptable, the cut down bricks look pretty ordinary but it all comes down to how fussy you want to be Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Re: Opinion on Brickwork 11Dec 17, 2007 5:36 pm Hi again everyone,
Thanks for all your replies. I'm pleased to report that we met with the building supervisor this afternoon and he took on board all of our concerns and they will all be rectified. The fall back towards the house and the bricks around the pipes are all getting ripped up and replaced. It doesn't look like that bricking contractor will be back! Thank you for all your help! Thanks for the suggestion. The space between shower and sinks was too tight. I agree about the toilet location. So I have tried two other options: The lower one is… 3 4557 these look like missing batts. Go up and take a look. But yeah moisure meter is a completely different tool 4 8402 I am in the same situation, would you be able to give some insights in to this? I am in SA 8 12746 |
