Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 20, 2011 1:59 pm We got our key's just before xmas... and after sealing all the walls etc over the past few weeks.. we are FINALLY moving in this weekend. Now we aren't getting any window covering's for a few weeks... What is the best to cover them and how? Someone suggested alfoil, newspaper... etc... How do you apply them.. without them wrecking your windows??? Or any other idea's thanks Don't want to put blanket's or anything like that up.. young kids would pull them down. Re: Moving in... temporarily need window covers... but what? 2Jan 20, 2011 2:26 pm We will be moving in shortly and wont be getting curtains/blinds straight away either, use Redishades they are paperish with double sided tape that you just simply stick onto the window frame, they are available from bunnings really cheaply and they look good. Do a search on here, heaps of people have used them Site Start: 10th September, 2010 PCI : Friday 27th January, 2011. I ended up ordering blinds in a box http://www.blindsinabox.net.au/ I only bought one box (6 blinds) just in case my curtains can't be installed when we move in and wherever we might need some privacy before the fence is up. Have you ordered blinds? Cos if you have then just do newspaper/foil. I think foil blocks out all light. Tape marks will eventually clean off the frame/glass. BTW I think I am ordering my wood blinds from ABC - they have a express service for ready mades but you get them cut to right size, supply only. I'm keen on their bamboo type which will be $1330 for 4 bedrooms. Re: Moving in... temporarily need window covers... but what? 6Jan 20, 2011 4:35 pm Newspaper is excellent (in fact we still have some up... err need to finish those windows coverings) but I digress, get a broadsheet like the age or australian and some 3m painters tape (we used the blue one, the green wasn't quite sticky enough),any big green shed or local equivalent should have it. its fairly expensive at $20 or so for a roll but left basically no residue on the windows even after a couple of weeks. We also tried sheets but they fell down on a warm night around 3am, and tbh you can buy several copies of a broadsheet newspaper for the cost of readyshades and you get better coverage. Just can't decide what to do with the windows.. so going to put some covering up atm... and see how we go. The fence on one side isn't up yet either.. we have been calling them aswell (grumpy face) Re: Moving in... temporarily need window covers... but what? 9Jan 20, 2011 7:07 pm If you're thinking of taping paper on - super cheap, super easy, super quick, super pretty and so many colours and patterns to choose from - the simple roll wrapping paper! Use the blue painters' tape (eg. 3M Scotch) - super easy, as you just tear it, can move it around if you make a mistake, can reuse it, can untape it easily with no markings whatsoever. Also, you can turn the white side of the paper to the outside, so the house looks uniform and pretty from the outside too and not messy or "too busy" And you can make the kids happy by letting them select their own "curtains" Excellent for simple screening, but may need more than 1 layer if your windows are north or north-west. But it depends - if you prefer to run A/C instead (don't think so!) My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Moving in... temporarily need window covers... but what? 10Jan 20, 2011 8:45 pm We went and bought bleached lined calico from Spot light - about 8 metres - it cost us $40 and looks a lot nicer than newspapers and it is handy to use as cleaning rags when finished! EDIT: we thumb tacked them to the tops of the architraves so you can't see the holes afterwards! Also makes your house look like you have a "hydroponics" setup on the go. Kathreen, there is a whole thread in the windows/doors forum dedicated to temporary window coverings. Might be worth having a look... viewtopic.php?f=23&t=31381 I do like the wrapping paper idea, though! I used Redi shades and thought they were brilliant (18 months later I still have some up ) the one advantage of temp blinds as opposed to newspaper is they can easily be drawn up to see out! IN Perth or they were last year still. Blinds in a box are similar. The deal with them is they look a whole lot better than newspaper and if need be you can keep them up for months and months where as i would hate to leave newspaper up that long. Re: Moving in... temporarily need window covers... but what? 14Jan 21, 2011 7:54 am Sheets nailed to the top of the window architraves. The nails should be a little in from the corner so as not to seperate the top and side architraves as they go in, and the head angled towards you so you don't hit the wall while hammering. You can also hang the sheets around the nail heads if you fold them over the back and wrap them around the right way. Or stick safety pins to the sheets and hang those over the nail heads. Safety pins 1/3 of the way up the sheet will let you hang the sheet in 3 layers, leaving the window 2/3 open. When you're done just take the nails out. No-one sees the top of the architraves so no-one will see the holes.
