Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 17, 2011 7:27 pm I'm building a new house and all the external sliding doors are supposed to be recessed. The slab went down just before Xmas and I was surprised to not see any rebates put into the slab. Is it normal for the rebates to be made when the slab is poured or are they cut in later? I'm querying my builder and they haven't responded yet and I'm worried that there has been a major stuff up here. Thanks for any info. Re: Sliding Door Track rebates 2Jan 17, 2011 8:32 pm Ours were recessed into the slab - but only a small portion of the recess is currently being used... They may just cut them in? What do you mean by "only a small portion is being used"? Thanks Re: Sliding Door Track rebates 4Jan 17, 2011 10:24 pm Does sound like they forgot... it's quite expensive to cut into the slab. Also take care that they cut enough to allow drainage. Ed "ECOECO" At 'EcoEco', we design windows, we design the best windows, we do it for you, so that when you’re happy we are happy. Do you know if the cutting in affects the engineering of the slab ie will they have to go back to the engineers and ensure that the slab still meets its spec with the cuts in? I'm wondering how thin the concrete will be under the cut area. I'm wondering how thin the concrete will be under the cut area. I have seen it done many times... I am sure it will be fine. Maybe only 40mm - 50mm. These are high ceilings so everything is nominal 2340 height with 2400 head. We just noticed that because the doors have been recessed, the full height windows now sit higher than the doors! Naturally we expected everything to be kept in alignment - either by recessing windows too, or else making the windows shorter by the amount of the rebate. Mrs dh_builder is very unhappy. Not sure what kind of response to expect from the builder. What would be normal here? Recess the windows too or make them smaller to start with? Or is it just a personal preference as to whether the door and window heads should be in alignment? Thanks. Doors are usually about 50mm taller than windows because windows sit on the bottom plate, with doors on the slab. If you are not at bricking stage, and it sounds like your windows are shorter than your door and they sit on the bottom plate. If so, you could remove the bottom plate and sit the windows on the slab. You will lose the skirting under the windows, but this is common. Bricking is due to start this week. Re: Sliding Door Track rebates 11Feb 13, 2011 4:03 pm Interesting. We are in the early stages of planning a build with Carlisle Homes, and I enquired about having the glass sliding doors to the Alfresco recessed into the slab, and I was told categorically that they will not do it. Apparently they did it once, and have had nothing but trouble with the sliding doors not functioning properly. Now their policiy is not to do it. I hope you can sort out your door height/window height issue, sounds like Ed has given you some good suggestions. Re: Sliding Door Track rebates 12Feb 13, 2011 7:54 pm I think it is just too much trouble for some builders - and I can see now that there is a lot to coordinate. But I can't see how recessing would impact the sliding door mechanism at all. I'm not sure removing the bottom plate will suffice. Just checked some pics I took today and it looks like it is out by about two bottom plate thicknesses. Should look ok. Ed "ECOECO" At 'EcoEco', we design windows, we design the best windows, we do it for you, so that when you’re happy we are happy. Yes, you're right... if you do it my way you get back to where you started... You will still have a minor problem inside, but this can be disguised with blinds or curtains. The construction is nearing completion and we noticed that the rebates haven't been made for our 6 slider door. The floor tiles have also been laid and the door installed when we made the builder realise that he forgot about this. He said he will do it , however I am not sure if it is possible. Can somebody please let us know if it is still possible or if the builder is trying to fool us around? Thanks Our standard double-glazed window is tested to achieve, Rw 34, and can be glazed to suit Rw 39. The price is good too... 3 9479 I’m in a similar position except I’m after sliding 3 stacking doors.
