Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 13, 2011 8:25 am Hi All, Just been told PD use F5 Pine timber for the frame, but most of other builders use MGP10 timber. Just wonder is that acceptable? I know F5 is the standard timber, but is MGP10 timber much better quality? How long the F5 timber frame can last? Please share your thoughts. Thanks. Re: Porter Davis Timber Frame 2Jan 13, 2011 10:05 am I think they will last the same time. I find MGP (Machine graded pine) much better to work with. It is less likely to twist and bow especially if it is a while before lock up is achieved. Make sure they straighten your walls properaly before plastr goes on. Re: Porter Davis Timber Frame 4Jan 13, 2011 1:12 pm the house would only fall down in the same circumstances that a MPG famed house would. My inspector said that my PD frame was one of the best he had seen. No loose noggins, no nails sticking out anywhere and all straight. Building quality has more to do with the tradesman than the materials Re: Porter Davis Timber Frame 5Jan 13, 2011 1:19 pm If you're concerned about a timber frame 'falling down', which I would think is incredibly unlikely with any builder... unless you experience some awful natural disaster in your area... then why not build with a builder who uses steel frames? It would put your mind at ease. Re: Porter Davis Timber Frame 6Jan 13, 2011 4:18 pm Kathy&Ben Hi All, Just been told PD use F5 Pine timber for the frame, but most of other builders use MGP10 timber. Hi Kathy&Ben, You have no need to worry, PD do use F5 timber which complies with all the building codes. There is a significant cost difference between F5 and MGP10, however we don't think it provides a necessary benefit as F5 is good quality pine timber and BCA compliant. I hope that helps. In fact we were so happy that we're building again with them in March. As just Erin has already pointed out, if it's that much of a concern for you, then perhaps you'd feel more at ease with a builder that uses a steel frame?? This is 100% true. You can not hang anything on steel frames. very frustrating 8 5346 Three options 1 Ask the liquidator 2 Find another PD customer and ask the source of their report 3 Pay for new report 3 12320 Thanks Pulse, thats really helpful and very much appreciated.
