Most builders will usually allow themselves longer to build than necessary (they don't want to have to pay liquidated damages) which results in VIC contracts stating between 220 to 290 days (depending on house size). NSW contracts are worded a little differently using business days (Vic use normal days - inclusive of weekends).
If you allowed for a sq (old school) per week then it usually leaves adequate time to finish off. i.e. 22sq = 22 weeks (plenty of time). May pay to actually nail your builder down (via variation) to committing to a set amount to ensure it doesn't get out of hand.
