Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 04, 2007 8:37 am Hi all,
This is the time for color selection, and i have one question. What is the different between off white, natural colour, and WHITE? It seems that off white is NOT WHITE at all, and contemplating to change to WHITE. Any one know how much roughly to "upgrade" to white from off white? Thanks ozn Re: Mortar colour: off white - natural - white? 2Dec 04, 2007 8:49 am I didn't know there was a difference. We had a choice between off-white and natural. My friend has just had her bricks done with off-white flush mortar and really light bricks and it looks white to me.
Jet Re: Mortar colour: off white - natural - white? 3Dec 04, 2007 11:43 am We changed to cream and it cost us around $1000. We wanted cream because we are having flush mortar on corner dented bricksso the look was important.
I am not convinced that it really looks cream but it is probably closer than what we would have got. Cost was related to 'special' sand, colour matching but probably mostof all to the BS factor. I wouldn't spend that sort of money on a whim as in "maybe cream will look nice", needs to be "won't look right unless it is cream". Assuming you used 10000 bricks, about $900 of the $1000 is the BS factor. Cream colour mortar uses yellow sand with Brighton Light (white) cement. Therefore the only additional charge would be for the cement, which is about $2 per bag more expensive than grey cement. As for colour matching, the brickies mix it in the same proportion regardless of the colour of sand or cement. Re: Mortar colour: off white - natural - white? 8Dec 05, 2007 8:22 am The problem is that in truth, they have me by the short and curlys.
If I don't like their price, I can just go with the default but then it may prove very expensive to get someone in later to fix it up. I can also go to another builder but then I have to abandon my plans and start again. The BS factor is always factored into my costings from the start. Just means that anyone buying the place from me in the future pays a bit more. Then again, I'll make saving elsewhere. Re: Mortar colour: off white - natural - white? 9Dec 05, 2007 9:50 am The builders certainly make the variations worth their while. People building for the first time generally are not aware of the costs involved and the builders prey on this. It goes a long way to making up the generally underquoted base price you see on their ads.
The situation is most obvoius in regard to "site costs". Some of the additional costs quoted on this forum have left me a little bit stunned. What I find hard to believe is that a Sales Consultant, presumably with no practical building experience, can give you a quote on what your additional site costs will be without seeing a contour plan, soil test, or the engineered slab design. But yes, you are correct, once you have signed the well and truly have you by the short and curlys. Good luck with you project. 2 1160 Hi, planning on using the attached stone pieces in my bathroom.
