I've take an STA test to a couple of builders in the past and they apparently weren't all that accurate. QST is pretty on the ball and alot of designer builders use them. As far as contour surveys use a consulting company like Steve Cooper and Associates surveyors or Watts Von Senden surveyors. The builder I built my first place with uses Cooper and I just got a survey done on our investment block with Watts. I will disagree with you about STA, a some builders dont like them because they pull them up on what the should be doing istead of cutting corners, you should be carefull before you make such comments about a company. I have used STA both times I have built and I cant fault thier work and the current build was on a difficult site. They also offer a complete service including foundation design, Geotechnical Engineering, structural engineering etc. http://www.staconsulting.com.au Cheers Lou http://take2-customdesigndownslope.blogspot.com 07-10-09 omg they have cut the block 14-05-10 we finally have the keys Re: Independent soil test and contours test 4Dec 08, 2010 10:18 am Let me re-phrase so I don't get shot. The builders that I took the tests to told me that STA weren't prefferable for them. It was on their advice that I employed QST to do my future tests and so far no complaints. An early test on my first build was done by with STA (via Dixon Homes) and it came up an M. The latter test I had completed by QST (via QLD Colonial who we eventually built with) coming back as an H with the need for upgraded under slab plumbing. Although the cost was about 6k more the slab definately aint moving. I just wonder why so much difference between soil testers is all. Re: Independent soil test and contours test 5Jan 15, 2012 9:12 am Thankyou to both of you - really appreciate the advice ! Please excuse the delay in replying - the floods really put a spanner in our works. We were not flooded but it was a really stressful time for all. The thing I am still finding frustrating is that I recieved a range of quotes from companies and I was wondering why. Is there a list of questions I should be asking so I get quotes that are comparable ? ie how many points will they take ? need boundary check, soil test, probablly no existing site pegs (too old an area), do they charge by the hour ? - found this information via a friend (couldn't find anything online and other sources not helpful) Re: Independent soil test and contours test 6Jan 15, 2012 9:55 am For the contour and title boundary survey I would tend to use the local licensed surveyor . As far as the soil tests a lot of the difference will depend on travelling time. This link gives some more info on tests http://www.anewhouse.com.au/?p=347 The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get !
