Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 14, 2010 8:24 pm Hi All, long time reader first time poster. I see some of the builders offer steel frame as a promotion, for example : http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f231/saransk/steelframe-1.jpg http://www.nationalbuilders.com.au/specials.php Is it a good idea to select a metal frame instead of old good timber one? Any ideas about pros and cons? Re: Steel frame versus timber frame 2Nov 14, 2010 8:36 pm Hi, I'm in the same predicament. Bear in mind that you have to have colorbond roof with still frame, and then anticon blanket with colorbond roof, which could all cost extra depending on your builder. I'm leaning towards timber as I like the tiled roof better. taki Building Havana Elite with side HT with MJD 20/04/11 DA approved by council 06/06/11 cut/fill 08/06/11 piering 20/6/11 slab 11/8/11 frame complete 18/9/11 lock up 28/11/11 handover booked Re: Steel frame versus timber frame 3Nov 14, 2010 8:45 pm taki Bear in mind that you have to have colorbond roof with still frame, and then anticon blanket with colorbond roof, which could all cost extra depending on your builder. Hmmm, last time I checked there are plenty of steel framed houses with tiles on the roof. NBG might have different rules ... Some people don't have time to do the job right the first time, but seem to have plenty of time to fix their mistakes. Re: Steel frame versus timber frame 6Nov 14, 2010 9:42 pm wakeboardandy I have steel frame and tiled roof, so don't know where you heard that. Hi wakeboardandy, two questions: 1. Is it a full steel frame or some sort of combined steel/timber one? 2. Is there any noise when temperature is changing? I heard some scary stories of colourbond roofs sounds, is the temperature expansion noise an issue with the frames too? Re: Steel frame versus timber frame 7Nov 15, 2010 5:54 am Not sure about other builders, but mine told me I cannot have steel frame with tiled roof, something about the roof trusses not being able to support the weight of tiles. There is 1.2 m between the supports and can't be changed, as opposed to 60cm gap between timber supports for the roof. Maybe there is a difference between types of steel frames? I heard some scary stories of colourbond roofs sounds, is the temperature expansion noise an issue with the frames too? It is full steel frame... Those scary stories you heard are all myths... Haven't had any noises from the frame in the nearly 18 months I've lived in the house. Partially correct. 1200 centres are normal for colourbond roofs, 600 for tiles. You can do either with steel frames. This is 100% true. You can not hang anything on steel frames. very frustrating 8 8050 Hi I am wanting some opinions about the build of a steel shed I am going to get one about 4.5 x 2.5 m steel shed and the height will be about 2.3-2.4m high The one I am… 0 14458 Hi, I have a steel frame house which was built 2 years ago.
