Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 26, 2008 8:17 am We are prepared to go to a cat 3 upgrade but no higher. We are building with PD. Our render colours will be paperbark and dune (both colourbond colours)
What sort of brick colour would you go for? We are looking at the pearl grey velour it wont be visable from the street but would like to have nice looking bricks anyway for the alfresco etc. What did you use and do you love it? Re: What boral brick did/would you use? 2May 26, 2008 9:20 am You sound exactly like me Penny - we are also building with PD and I really don't want to go higher than a cat 3 brick.
Our brick will be seen from the front though - also with some render - most likely Dune I went out to Boral and have done alot of driving around different estates to see the bricks in person and still can't decide. My favourite brick is the bricks used on the Cremorne at Caroline Springs - don't know the name of it, I also like Coco and Vanilla - both cat 5 though!! Funnily enough I also like Pearl Grey Velour - I saw it on one house and didn't like it as much in person, also the lady at Boral told me if I am using it on a large scale it tends to look a bit bland and sort of 'industrial'...but I think in your instance for just the sides and back of the house it would look quite good. I have also seen people use Tanami - Cat 1 or cat 2 from memory, and it can look quite nice when used this way... Good Luck I hope you don't get as confused as me!! My karma ran over your dogma Re: What boral brick did/would you use? 3May 26, 2008 9:50 am we used coral stone - Category 6 from West Aust!! We didnt want to go above cat 1....then cat 2...then cat 3... then we begged to use austral bricks....then cat4....then came to the conclusion all boral bricks were ugly! then we found this one, asked for addreses where it was used, and took a drive to torquay, being the only home in Vic at that time...
having said that, the bricks were the only thing we had a really difficult time selecting... Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Re: What boral brick did/would you use? 4May 26, 2008 9:59 am Exactly like me Vanders!!
I begged to use Austral - it seems so stupid you can use them for the lowest and highest price PD homes but not the middle range homes I am still stuck on bricks. It is the only decision (oh and the splashback ) that is really getting to me!!!! My karma ran over your dogma Re: What boral brick did/would you use? 5May 26, 2008 10:44 am Gotta love austral, we used Dampier, althought it looks mildly different in IRL.
http://www.australbrick.com.au/wa/product.php?ID=817 Would post a pic of IRL, but darling DH has been farting around with different linux operating systems on my laptop and it currently won't accept my camera or flashdrive. Work in progress apparently. Best way to choose bricks is to drive around all new suburbs and try and figure out which is which on actual houses. So many look so different to the brochures and even the sample ones in brick shop. If you're really bold, even knock on someones door and ask. We were originally going to go with a pale one.. http://www.australbrick.com.au/wa/product.php?ID=817 but every house we saw in it, we hated because it had all these squiggles built into it, that the sample and pictures didn't. Just not our cup of tea. Re: What boral brick did/would you use? 7May 26, 2008 12:32 pm Be warned........I spoke to a rep at a brick display centre here in sydney - PGH or Boral - can't remember which now, & was told that they would soon be discontinuing the practice of handing out addresses of newly built homes. The reason is because too many brick customers are knocking on people's doors & the owners are unhappy. Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: What boral brick did/would you use? 9May 26, 2008 2:55 pm Hey Penny
I can't remember the number/street name of the house but it was in Point Cook - ring Boral and ask (perhaps before they stop giving out addresses ) I would never knock on someones door - too embarassed for that sort of thing Austral has a far better range, particularly for their lower categories... You have the same worries as me about Tanami, I think it looks good in pic and I saw it on Kryton's house on here and it looks nice, but the house that Boral gave me - it looked too orange...so hard to know what you will get. I think the off white mortar is around $900 to upgrade on our PD double story home, I'm thinking of upgrading to a higher cat brick but without the mortar so I save money somewhere... Such a hard decision, and makes such a huge difference to the home!! Good Luck My karma ran over your dogma Re: What boral brick did/would you use? 10May 26, 2008 5:41 pm Thanks
Just been out to Boral have an address in Point Cook for the Pearl Grey will check it out tomorrow. ALso just went to look at houses with Eureka and Port Phillip actually really liked the Eureka. That is the no 1 choice atm. We will see what the pearl grey is like tomorrow. Did they let you use Austral bricks when you begged Re: What boral brick did/would you use? 11May 26, 2008 5:45 pm Hi,
We went with the Boral Hobart, lovely brick. Re: What boral brick did/would you use? 13May 26, 2008 6:16 pm Hey Penny
Glad they gave you some address' to look at I think I like the Eureka too - haven't seen it on a house yet, I like Port Phillip too, however, it seems to look soo different on people's house, sometimes brown, sometimes tan...its is such a hard decision. Let us know how you go with the bricks when you see them My karma ran over your dogma Re: What boral brick did/would you use? 14May 26, 2008 7:27 pm The hobart does look nice but too red for what I am trying to achieve I think.
I love love love La mesa but it is a cat 6 so no way I havent seen domino it isnt on our list of options but as we want a lighter brick probably doesnt matter too much. Has anyone done their house in Eureka?? Re: What boral brick did/would you use? 15May 26, 2008 8:05 pm We're going with the Cat 1 range - Boral Horizon Graphite. It's a pale-ish brick without any red undertones. Our rendered part is in Bristol Burma Buff; guttering, garage door and front door in Colorbond Woodland Grey with Paperbark downpipes. It looks good with these colours (I have seen the display wall but not a full house with the brick).
I didn't want to upgrade the brick as there were other upgrades that I thought were more important. Judie Re: What boral brick did/would you use? 16May 26, 2008 8:11 pm I agree Penny La Mesa is gorgeous that is the brick I think that has been used on the Cremorne which I love - at over $5000 though I doubt it....
Judie - I just checked out the Horizon Graphite you have selected - gorgeous brick, just the colour I love and a category 1, noticed it is a NSW brick though so don't think we can get it here in Vic Actually all the NSW Horizon range are very nice - much nicer than the VIC range.. Hmm I wonder if PD will let us choose a brick from the NSW range at a small cost My karma ran over your dogma Re: What boral brick did/would you use? 17May 26, 2008 10:29 pm I wonder why the ranges aren't the same? I can understand a difference between, say, NSW and WA. But not NSW and VIC. Weird. Guess all you can do is ask. Maybe you'll have to smuggle some over the border if they say no?!!!
