Browse Forums Building A New House Re: How often do you visit your site? 41Nov 09, 2010 9:03 pm Almost everyday But I have an excuse lol its 7 acres and we take the dogs out there for there daily run. Couldnt take them today was worried they would run all over the new slab So may have to spend twice as much time there tomorrow Cheers Janet Re: How often do you visit your site? 42Nov 10, 2010 8:32 am sleven Visited my site at 6pm tonight then went down with DH and Mum at 7.15pm - in that time someone tried to break in through the internal access door... AGAIN... GGGrrrrr I can relate to that...went to our site one night after work, timber windows in, all good. The next night, one timber window missing, ripped right out of the wall. No wonder we all go down to our site to check it out. I know we are insured by the builder but even so, you just don't want things stolen from your house! Plus depending on what they take there can be long delays in getting them replaced. We have just had our plastering done, mind you the 1st level bricking isn't finished yet. We are keeping as close an eye as possible on the place, but if they really want to take something they will. Builders say they can't do much about it. They actually factor in a percentage for losses in our contract price. Re: How often do you visit your site? 43Nov 10, 2010 2:42 pm It's really important to visit your site at the early stages, and take a tape measure with you! When things go seriously wrong in building its generally because mistakes are made with the set-out of the home and the construction of the walls. I'd suggest the following; 1. Plumbing Prelay - before the slab goes down. Check all plumbing points to make sure waste pipes are in the right position and not in walls and also check that all points are in! Often plumbers leave out a waste pipe for a vanity basin or a floor waste. Mistakes can be made after all, they are only human. 2. Once the slab is poured - Measure the slab distance from the boundary to ensure your setbacks are OK 3. As the walls are going up - Check your brickwork as it's going up to ensure the room dimensions are as per the plans. Good brickies will ping the slab which will show the setout of the walls. That's a great time to run your tape measure BEFORE they lay any bricks. Steve Fitzpatrick Re: How often do you visit your site? 44Nov 11, 2010 7:17 am I go at least once, if not twice a day, as it is on the way to and from Daycare drop off. Builder, from the start, has encouraged my prescence on site. I am also to do some work on my build too, which automatically allows me supervised site access. We lock up the gates at night and make sure that we open up again by 5.30am next morning as sometimes the tradies are there by then. Re: How often do you visit your site? 47Nov 13, 2010 1:29 am We generally go every night together. Sometimes during the day instead depending on work times for us. My friend lives 5 mins away and drives past then txts if anything is happening. There is more work happening around us now so we may meet some neighbours visiting their land, slab, and we met the people almost ready to move in. We thought we were strange getting so excitted to stand on our land, touch the slab, see workers on our site, then we found H1 and its all normal. Re: How often do you visit your site? 48Nov 13, 2010 10:28 am Nearly every second day I go visit my site. I mostly go after work since its just 10mins from work and pretty much the same distance from new home to current home... I've hardly seen any tradies working on the house. Its pretty amazing sometimes what they manage to do in a couple of days and what they dont do in weeks! Re: How often do you visit your site? 50Nov 13, 2010 8:44 pm When it was just a vacant lot I was visiting about once a month. Since we got the site start letter I've started visiting weekly but that'll increase once the slab is laid. We live about 15 to 20 minutes drive away, so far my wife has been there just the twice but we have a new born and she is waiting for the all clear to drive. Go past the build a couple of times a day on the way to shops etc. Get to see lots of Tradies and keep a close eye on progress.
