Browse Forums Building A New House Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 141Mar 05, 2011 1:39 am ok, so looking at my plans it says 'Garage conc.@-100mm and I have a one and a half brick drop from the garage door leading into the house. The pad is even all the way round. Having now spent quite some time asking around, everyone else has got just one brick showing. hmm - it's really bugging me now. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 142Mar 05, 2011 7:17 am Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 143Mar 05, 2011 8:10 am Thanks Wandering. It's not just mine. Makes you wonder why when our block is elevated so high.In lower area you would think so for water drainage. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 144Mar 05, 2011 11:36 am Thanks duke! Maybe it's a DAH way of laying slabs then. Whatever the answer, one brick I can step up and down easily, anymore and it's difficult, so it's a concern for me. I wish I had clarified how low they would put the pad down rather than just going by what all the other houses I've seen are. Oh for the gift of Hindsight! lol Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 145Mar 05, 2011 12:23 pm I wonder if you can ask the SS to lay an in between step since you didn't know it was going to be that low and it will be a trip hazard for you. All it is either brick mortared solid bricks on pad or small concrete step or bricks with cement render. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 146Mar 05, 2011 1:01 pm hmm, the additional step might work - I'd have to see if that would work for me, thanks for the idea! Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 147Mar 05, 2011 4:32 pm snowyowl Thanks duke! Maybe it's a DAH way of laying slabs then. I wish I had clarified how low they would put the pad down rather than just going by what all the other houses I've seen are. Oh for the gift of Hindsight! lol So is your concrete the same as Duke's ie just over 1 brick or is it more? Is that a bigger drop than other houses? I've never noticed (my current house is set up differently). Have to go have a look at all the garages around the place! Nice concrete Duke! Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 148Mar 05, 2011 4:49 pm It looks as though my pad is a tad lower but it's hard to tell without measuring them both. The funny thing is I thought the house we are living in was a one brick drop, but I had a look this morning and it's a half brick drop. I think the levels are all down to the builder to be honest, because they all don't seem to be the same.
Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 149Mar 05, 2011 5:01 pm You would think all garages would be the same - just shows you can't assume! I saw your question to Duke about the linen cupboard floor in the laundry - what have they done with yours? Ours is a similar linen cupboard to yours and I am now wondering what happens with it - I hope it gets tiled - I never thought to ask about it until I saw your question - Wonder what it is like in the display? Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 150Mar 05, 2011 5:29 pm Nope, we must never assume anything. You know how the phrase goes about assuming things! 'It makes an A** out of U and ME!' lol Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 151Mar 05, 2011 5:41 pm Only two stars? Must be bad ;P. Only problem is you expect same quality as shown in display home so what ever the level is in the garage is the level in the display. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 152Mar 05, 2011 6:29 pm lol - yep, only 2 stars! I might drop by one of the display homes, there are a number of things I want to double check on. But duke, we know all about things not being the same as the display! lol Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 153Mar 08, 2011 9:55 pm Update time: Mouldings have been redone - very happy - great job done - looks totally amazing compared to the rubbish ones they had tried to get away with! Plumbing has been sorted in the laundry, and the tiling was almost complete - well it was when I rocked up at 4pm. And discovered that they had only done one strip of feature tiles in my showers instead of two! Such a shame too, as looking at the job they had done - it all looked very good so far! I felt so sad for the guy who had just finished putting the last tile in place in the shower... his face dropped and I felt so mean and he'd finished the other shower too. So, I guess they had to stay a little later tonight - oops! It seems that our 'finals' are being started at the end of the week. Not sure what they mean by 'finals' but it sure sounds good! My mind has been preoccupied thanks to Bagheeras thread, about paint. My budget was $200 for paint brushes and paint! lol Waaaay too low! Perhaps we should have taken a trip to Bunnings at the budget making stage. Not that it matters anyway... why we even thought about doing a budget in the first place I have no idea, we never do budgets, it kinda takes the fun out of it all! Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 155Mar 08, 2011 11:08 pm I think we went over $200 with ours with the current house on paint and accessories. We got a metal mixer that can be attached to the drill and made mixing paint in the can so easy. Paint edger is also much neater than a hand painted edger and the painter maintenance man was impresed with the edging as it was better than his touch up. $200 is not a bad estimate but you will go over depending on accessories like sanding, patching stuff, masking tape, blah, blah. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 156Mar 08, 2011 11:44 pm Hey Wandering, All 4 recessed vanities are the same, we went with laminex polar white for the benchtop and the fronts laminex liquorice linear SILK finish. The silk finish was an upgrade. For the tiles we upgraded to the Mocha Grains board. Wall and skirting tiles are gloss white 200 x 300 laid horizontally, 2 feature strips of glass tiles, and 200 x 200 Manhatten Espresso. The floor tiles go really well with my bamboo floor. duke, you have to be kidding me right - surely with newly plastered walls i shouldn't have to be sanding and patching them.? They should be as smooth as glass and ready to seal! If we have to do all this I might as well just ask OH to replaster the whole house himself, at least it will be perfect then. I like the sound of a paint edger, must look into getting one of those. I like nice clean sharp finishes! So, d'you think I could maybe get everything I need for around $500 realistically then? Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 157Mar 09, 2011 12:14 am Yeah depending on number of coats. Std 2 coatd plus sealer usually enough for a 270+sqm home. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 158Mar 09, 2011 12:21 am Oh cool, that sounds ok then! I didn't like the idea of spending a huge amount of dollars on paint. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 159Mar 09, 2011 12:28 am Oh, white covers up a lot of tradies inadequacies. You will see it once a darker paint goes on. Why do you think they do it in white At least you don't need sugar soap to wipe down the wall. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River.
