WA 162Mar 09, 2011 12:58 am oh guys - you have no idea how complicated this is getting for me! I thought I'd be able to pick up a couple of big tubs of some breathable paint, ideal for painting on newly plastered walls. And just paint the walls. Now I have to sand, patch, wash down with sugar soap and seal before I get to splash the paint around. *sigh* Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 163Mar 09, 2011 2:23 am snowyowl Hey Wandering, All 4 recessed vanities are the same, we went with laminex polar white for the benchtop and the fronts laminex liquorice linear SILK finish. The silk finish was an upgrade. For the tiles we upgraded to the Mocha Grains board. Wall and skirting tiles are gloss white 200 x 300 laid horizontally, 2 feature strips of glass tiles, and 200 x 200 Manhatten Espresso. The floor tiles go really well with my bamboo floor. Thanks SnowyOwl - sounds great - we have a similar use of white (but different laminates/tiles - similar tones I think though). Would love to see it if you wanted to post a picture - but understand if you don't etc. I can't wait to see mine!! I am not very patient As to your painting questions - all of this is why I am hoping to find someone to paint my place for me I have no idea what colour though... Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 164Mar 09, 2011 7:49 am It's very hard choosing which laminex goes with which though - isn't it! ... such a lot of choice and posible combinations. We are happy with what we've gone for. It's not my usual colour scheme (not sure whether that's a good idea or not) but I wanted to go out of my comfort zone. But think Buddhism, peace and tranquility and that's the overall look my home will have when it's all done. So I can escape the hectic world of WA and meditate. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 165Mar 09, 2011 8:17 am It's not as bad as it sounds snowy, it's only a few spots that may need patching and rollers usually mask a lot of little imperfections. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 166Mar 09, 2011 9:16 am Oh, so I shouldn't really need to do all the walls - just wherever the plasterers haven't done a great job in the odd little place. Well, it's still not what I expect to have to do - but at least that's better than what I was beginning to think I had to do. If that's the case then I probably woudn't need OH to replaster. Although having said that there are some areas that have to be chipped away and redone around the door frames because I don't like the sunken door frame look - and not only that how on earth am I supposed to put the skirting boards there when they do that. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 167Mar 09, 2011 12:21 pm Yeap. They like to do that around the wet areas for bath/toilet/laundry or where it is close to the othwr wall. I would be nicer if they did that that they do it all th way to the ceiling so you don't notice it as much. It's something that should be asked to/from the client - like all other stuff. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 168Mar 09, 2011 1:10 pm *sigh* ok someone please tell me what on earth is the point of having a tiling meeting and discussing where tiles are to go and how they are to be laid and even holding them up to the wall. If they are just going to go ahead and ignore it all! Two vertical strips in the showers, it's not hard - it says it on the plans - we talked about it. So why do they just put one up? Having spoken to the tiler yesterday and pointed out the mistake they said they'd correct it. I told them very clearly it was both bathrooms.. 'Yes, yes yes both bathrooms' he said. So today I rocked up at the house - tiler was busy with the last bits to the ensuite. Both strips had been laid - happy with that. Walked over the bathroom that hadn't been touched, so I thought I'd go home and go back in half an hour. So I went back and the tiler was in the bathroom not taking the tiles off but grouting!!! So, I give up... I'm just going to let DAH subbies do what they want with my house - after all what's it got to do with me?? Getting really fed up now when things go wrong with them all saying 'it's not my fault'. Well, who's fault is it then? It's certainly not mine! Having said that, the tilers have done a really good job so far, so I'm happy to leave it like it is as long as they grout the tiles properly and leave no bubble gaps. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 169Mar 09, 2011 3:32 pm If you paid extra for the feature, I would ask for it to be refunded or credited. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 170Mar 17, 2011 4:21 pm bit of an update! The finals are coming along nicely, am loving the kitchen workbench! It lux like everything is on paper , its just upto the tiler how to interpret, they donot have verbal communication with SS i blive. Luckily i went there b4 they started n cud correct them n explained to htem wat i need. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 173Mar 17, 2011 5:13 pm we had the meeting with our tilers and I had sketches to show them where the feature tiles are to be installed... made sure that the tilers understood everything... they did ring me a couple of times just to confirm that they understood the instructions but overall they've done what we asked them to do. At the meeting I asked them to give me an opinions and they kind of shrug they shoulders and told me that it's up to me what I want... the SS was there and he did come up with some suggestions which did help.... WA 175Mar 20, 2011 1:56 pm We had our tile meeting with SS while the tiler was on site. Thankfully, our feature tiles were put exactly where we wanted them. I made a point of making prestart girl draw on the plans how I wanted them. One strip down the centre of the far wall of the main bathroom, and one strip down the centre of the feature pier in the ensuite. The SS drew a line with black marker on the wall and told the tiler where exactly they had to go. As for plaster.. be careful when you're sanding it back! We had a professional painter in to do our whole house. He told us that he *almost* hit grey plaster when sanding some of the walls, cos the white set hadn't been put on thick enough. So just be careful!! Our walls are Solver Moondust (same as the Nautilus display), and you can see the iffy bits at different times of the day depending on how the light hits the walls. Oceanic with Nautilus upgrades. Handover 8 September 2010 Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 176Mar 20, 2011 4:16 pm I'm not sure where my tiling went wrong to be honest. I met with both the SS and the tiler. Tiles were drawn and marked on the wall, we were all singing from the same hymn sheet so to speak - and I kept going in the see what they were doing - and yet still mistakes were made. It happens - and as annoying as it is at the time - in the big scheme of things - it's not important. I'm no longer bothered whether my walls are perfect when I go to paint - not that I have any idea when the walls will be painted. Life has a habit of throwing you a curve ball when you least expect it and priorities change. So, what I'm trying to say is - it's not a big thing for me anymore whether my tiles are just perfect, or the walls are flawless - it's all so very minor now. Looking on the bright side our pavers have been delivered, the electricals have been done. The only thing that is holding us up is the splashback. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 179Mar 21, 2011 10:31 am Was watching Gran Design Australia - lake bennet house episode and the things he went through just to build a simple house makes ours look pail in comparrison. But the effect on us is still the same. If only the builders to the tradies realise how it affects our health when they don't do things properly. Wishing best of health and smooth build to all concerned. Re: SnowyOwl: Building with DAH, South of the River. WA 180Mar 28, 2011 10:55 am How are we SO. Hope everything still churning along.
