Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 30, 2010 10:42 pm Hi, just building a new home in Perth and due to get handover in 5 weeks. We have had different opinions on what sort of airconditioner we should install. We originally wanted to get the ducted reverse cycle install but we have heard that the running cost is quite expensive compared to the evaporative system. As the cost of electricity is going up we are now thinking of going with the evaporative system and plus the cost of installing one is also far cheaper. But I've also been told that the evoporative in no good when the humidity is high. So electricity vise which one is cheaper to run? And more effective in Perth weather? Thanks Re: Ducted Refridgerated Reverse Cycle Vs Evaporative Airc 2Oct 30, 2010 10:56 pm Hi he82306 My personal experience has not been good with evaporative. Yes, it's cheaper to install and maybe cheaper to run but come summer, whenever the temp reached over 35 degrees you might as well have been outside. I've been debating the same thing have had quotes for ducted reverse cycle refrig ranging from 9-14k. I'm going to bite the bullet and pay the extra rather than pay 3-5k for something that's not going do the job at the height of summer (when you most need it). But still get a range of opinions, other's may have had a different experience. ____________________________ SuzanneW https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=38219 Pre-Start 01/10/10 Slab 14/01/11 Brickwork 28/02/11 Roof Frame 24/03/11 Re: Ducted Refridgerated Reverse Cycle Vs Evaporative Airc 3Oct 30, 2010 11:20 pm Yes, refrigerated air is considerably more to both install and run. However, on hot, humid days you'll be glad you have it! The other thing that can help is to install ceiling fans in bedrooms and most-used living areas. That can cut your air con usage down.
