Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 21, 2010 7:32 am In short: The tiles are done, they look awesome BUT they have laid tiles in the loungeroom which is meant to be carpet Did i mention they are laid diagonally??? We won't have to pay whatever the decision is. Option one: Keep tiles (use rug etc) Option two: Staple carpet over tiles, this will wreck them, but we will get carpet Option three: Jackhammer tiles, install carpet. DH and i can't decide so we need YOUR HELP. We need to tell builder tomorrow morning (friday!) The VOTE will start Jackhammer:0 Tiles:0. It seems tiles are more hygenic to clean. I vote tiles but DH votes carpet. They have all been really helpful and very professional. I accept it was an honest mistake, i'm just seeking advice on how to make the best of a bad situation. plan,block,contract:8-9/2009 Land settle & FHOG$:15/2/2010 Site start:19/5 Slab:4/6 Frames&Trusses:11/6 Roof,windows:24/6 Bricks:1-5/7 Gyprock:14-16/7 Kitchen!,garage door:5/8 Driveway,verandah,tank:2/9 Paint:17-23/9 Tiles!!:15-20/10 Kitchen&bathroom appliances,blinds:22/10 Carpet:8/11My blog: http://buildingbug.blogspot.com Re: Tiles v Jackhammer 24hrs to decide VOTE NOW!!! 8Oct 21, 2010 2:40 pm Hi Kodaz Tiles are a lot more expensive to buy and lay compared to carpet (maybe twice the cost?) The builder is willing to pay for the extra tiles or if we have carpet he will also pay for carpet plus jackhammer etc. I think he plans to work out where the mistake was made and get them to pay OR claim on insurance?? Either way he will pay costs, but we won't be getting any credits back. plan,block,contract:8-9/2009 Land settle & FHOG$:15/2/2010 Site start:19/5 Slab:4/6 Frames&Trusses:11/6 Roof,windows:24/6 Bricks:1-5/7 Gyprock:14-16/7 Kitchen!,garage door:5/8 Driveway,verandah,tank:2/9 Paint:17-23/9 Tiles!!:15-20/10 Kitchen&bathroom appliances,blinds:22/10 Carpet:8/11My blog: http://buildingbug.blogspot.com Re: Tiles v Jackhammer 24hrs to decide VOTE NOW!!! 10Oct 21, 2010 2:42 pm Tiles & a nice new rug Block bought 1st RBC X! 2nd Ventrua,Keeper! They aren't very good quality as they were taken through the windows. Also note they haven't been grouted in these pics, they look better grouted but you get the idea. The tiles were intentionally laid on a diagonal (this cost us extra), with tiles laid throughout the whole house except bedrooms & *loungeroom* You can see they ran out but have since been able to get a few extras. They only needed about 8 more tiles to finish, which is lucky considering they tiled a whole extra room! plan,block,contract:8-9/2009 Land settle & FHOG$:15/2/2010 Site start:19/5 Slab:4/6 Frames&Trusses:11/6 Roof,windows:24/6 Bricks:1-5/7 Gyprock:14-16/7 Kitchen!,garage door:5/8 Driveway,verandah,tank:2/9 Paint:17-23/9 Tiles!!:15-20/10 Kitchen&bathroom appliances,blinds:22/10 Carpet:8/11My blog: http://buildingbug.blogspot.com Re: Tiles v Jackhammer 24hrs to decide VOTE NOW!!! 14Oct 21, 2010 3:02 pm I really think laying carpet over tiles etc is "WAY,CRAZY" NO,NO,NO Shouldn't he have to fix the problem so thats its acceptable to you ,some-one else may know that answer for you. We also have an open plan living area next to the kitchen. The loungeroom will be used as a loungeroom/kids room (when we have kids ) or possibly a study - it has three closed in sides and one side open to hallway. The tiles are cream and the same throughout the whole house. Laid diagonally in all living areas, and straight in wet areas. I hope this helps! plan,block,contract:8-9/2009 Land settle & FHOG$:15/2/2010 Site start:19/5 Slab:4/6 Frames&Trusses:11/6 Roof,windows:24/6 Bricks:1-5/7 Gyprock:14-16/7 Kitchen!,garage door:5/8 Driveway,verandah,tank:2/9 Paint:17-23/9 Tiles!!:15-20/10 Kitchen&bathroom appliances,blinds:22/10 Carpet:8/11My blog: http://buildingbug.blogspot.com Re: Tiles v Jackhammer 24hrs to decide VOTE NOW!!! 19Oct 21, 2010 4:00 pm Hi Higher Destiny We went with carpet because it was on the plan and tiles is very expensive to add. I didn't consider it before the tiles were laid by mistake, but now i have to think about it i think tiles are a good idea. The bonus is we have the option of a more expensive flooring that is more durable at no extra cost. If we can pull it off i would love the best of both worlds (carpet over top but not stuck down) as when we sell we can say they have a CHOICE of floor covering! Also if we rent it, we could take out the rugs/ carpet so it isn't ruined. I'm happy with a rug as i've seen it done plenty of times and it works well, it just depends on whether we want only carpet. arrgghhh so many decisions :S plan,block,contract:8-9/2009 Land settle & FHOG$:15/2/2010 Site start:19/5 Slab:4/6 Frames&Trusses:11/6 Roof,windows:24/6 Bricks:1-5/7 Gyprock:14-16/7 Kitchen!,garage door:5/8 Driveway,verandah,tank:2/9 Paint:17-23/9 Tiles!!:15-20/10 Kitchen&bathroom appliances,blinds:22/10 Carpet:8/11My blog: http://buildingbug.blogspot.com Re: Tiles v Jackhammer 24hrs to decide VOTE NOW!!! 20Oct 21, 2010 4:15 pm We have a room that will be our "future" kids playroom. We opted for laminate timber floors and plan on getting a big piece of carpet edged when the kids come along for a softer covering that can be removed when its dirty! I think keeping the tiles can be a good option and really you can have the option of hard/soft floor covering when you choose to. But with carpet you can only really have soft!!
