Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 29, 2010 11:38 am I was just curious to know whether anyone has taken a close look at the workmanship in the roof framework....and if so- What is it like? Our colourbond it yet to go on and my husband got a ladder and walked through the roof framework (He was doing some work up there) He was surprised to stumble across a few things we aren't happy with. Some of these things include nails that haven't gone in properly, random protuding nails that don't seem to serve a purpose as well as areas you would expect nails and there isn't. (He discovered this by leaning on something and it moved!) Of even greater concern there are some lengths of wood with large splits in them and some areas of wood don't meet very well or aren't secured to each other very well. It just seems like 'lazy' work. I haven't been up with a ladder myself and without walking through the roof framework wouldn't notice these things from the ground. If my husband hadn't needed to go up there to complete some work we might not have even noticed. Just to play Devil's advocate I suggested to my husband that this might be 'normal' and that most people's framework looks like this but that probably never notice because the roof and gyprock goes on and you never actually see it. My husband plans to take the photos to the Site Supervisor but I was just curious to know whether anyone else has experienced anything like this. Part of me is half expecting the site supervisor to just shrug his shoulders and say that you won't see the messy framework once the ceiling and roof goes on. Do you think it would be unreasonable to expect that they fix it now before any further work is done? Cheers! Re: Workmanship of roof framework- Has anyone taken a close 2Sep 29, 2010 3:36 pm Hi I noticed with our frame-walls & roof that some bits look a bit ******* and there are random bits that are questionable. Is your roof frame absolutely complete? Have you thought about getting a building inspector to have a look for peace of mind? Re: Workmanship of roof framework- Has anyone taken a close 3Sep 29, 2010 4:02 pm We had some parts where our roof frame didn't touch the wall frame, even though they were specifically in spots where it said 'support here'. We questioned this with the builder and were told that this was because of the span of the house. If you bring it up with the builder and you don't like the response, consider getting an independent inspector in. contract signed: Nov 09 Released to Construction: 23 Jul 10 Slab poured: 9 Aug 10 Frame completed: 30 Aug 10 Windows & Gutters: 7 Sep 10 Bricks: 15 - 23 Sep 10 Roof: 24 Sep 10 Gyprock: 20 Oct 10 Lockup: 25 Oct 10 Kitchen: 27 Oct 10 Tiling: 6 - 9 Nov 10 Painting: 17 Nov 10 Carpet: 30 Nov 10 PCI: 15 Dec 10 Handover: 17 Dec 10 https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=35943 Re: Workmanship of roof framework- Has anyone taken a close 4Sep 29, 2010 8:37 pm Thanks for your responses! Yep cooped 07- apparently the roof framework was supposed to be complete. Fortunately we've had a positive response from our site supervisor. He came by this afternoon and we had a thorough walk through the place (Or at least my husband climbed through the framework and my site supervisor took notes from the ground) He noted everything that needs to be corrected and this will be done first thing in the morning! So fortunately no need for an independent building inspector at this point in time. I'm pleased that my husband had work that needed to be done up there- otherwise many of the things may have been overlooked. Cheers!
