Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 25, 2010 8:12 pm Hi guys, I'm new to this forum as we are looking at building on a block we have just bought. We have previoulsy renovated two houses but this is our first step into building from a blank canvas. I would like to find out opinions on how many people used a formal tender system to choose your builder. Currently we are talking to one builder we have wanted to work with for years. Now the time has come and we are talking and discussing our drawings with them only. Should I waste other builders time or just go on gut feeling as to how close the builder is to our budget and building requirements. Thanks for all comments. Re: Formal Tender or not 2Sep 25, 2010 9:14 pm I have never had to for personal purposes but have had to write and perform tender reviews in professional life. From this experience, my advice is to definitely do it. Considering the amount you will be spending, seeking at least 3 responses and comparing them all against each other is essential. Depending upon how far you want to take it, you can rank each builder using a criteria that considers things like timely delivery (perhaps through previous jobs), cost, construction method, safety and quality. This makes the whole process fair and ensures that the aspects most important to you are more heavily considered. It may go without saying however generally the cheapest is not the best!!! Dont look at it as your wasting others time (unless you have already made up your mind!). If another builder demonstrates they will be the best for the project, leaves a great impression and is competitive with price then they will have a great chance of getting your job!? Re: Formal Tender or not 3Sep 25, 2010 9:19 pm Sierra, Thankyou for your response. The hardest part for us is which other builders do we selected to tender with. We would have to either use the internet or yellow pages to find a name, or drive around new estates in the area to find other builders. We will consider it further as we are still within the design phase. Hey. Head to a metal and decide on which profile you will use first.
