It does damage easily but that's called character and eventually you can resand. I would never use a gloss finish as it shows every speck of dirt. A satin finish is much more forgiving. Re: Tiles or wood? 11Nov 14, 2007 10:05 pm Tile for all main living area, hallway, alfresco, porch, and all wet areas.
Carpet in bedrooms. I like wood flooring, but dont like the maintenance. it is easier to damage the wood flooring (for example water spill, etc). ozn Re: Tiles or wood? 12Nov 14, 2007 10:17 pm Quote: I should also put on here that we are also thinking of bamboo for the environmental factor. Jet I'd review that one Jet. Bamboo sounds all warm and renewable - but they do a hell of of processing to make it into floorboards - washing, Steaming, cutting, glueing etc before it can be used as a floorboard. More info here. http://www.bamboofloor.com.au/flooring.htm And as for floors, I'm a timber floors person. No carpet thanks (rugs here and there) and I've had marble, tiles, and timber floors (Baltic pine, radiata pine, and jarrah) in various places, and my choice is still real imber. Steve Re: Tiles or wood? 13Nov 15, 2007 7:27 am Thanks for that Steve, I have had a look at the way they make it and there are a lot of similarities between the way they make timber.
We have a lot of issues with the heat here in queensland and as our house will have a lot of sunlight and also the wear and tear of being on acreage (read, kids constantly bringing in dirt etc ) There will be less stress on bamboo for the constant cleaning, I also love my steam mop and laminate won't last as long. It's so hard to find one type of flooring that doesn't have a major environmental impact, I think bamboo is the lesser of two evils. I think timber is winning when it comes to most peoples choice? Jet Re: Tiles or wood? 14Nov 15, 2007 7:41 am royalblue Timber in preference to tiles except for wet areas and carpeted areas. Carpets DEFINITELY in bedrooms, and loungeroom (at least). Yep same here. Re: Tiles or wood? 15Nov 15, 2007 8:43 am Ahhh with 3 under 4 I understand where you are coming from.
We have just moved from wooden "real" floors to our new house and it has tiles. I have to MOP and Vac soooooo much more. We went for a mocha colour thinking it would not show up the dirt.... Ha were we wrong! There is not a lot you can do about it though as most "floating" floors will not stand up to the damage young kids can inflict. So for us its tiles for now and hopefully the next house (aka kids older) will have timber. Re: Tiles or wood? 16Nov 15, 2007 9:25 am I think it's a matter of preference. We love timber flooring (real, not floating), so we went for it in the entire house (upstairs as well) except the wet areas of course.
To me it's gives the house more warmth than the tiles, and also less chance of kids doing serious damage to their heads in a fall. We don't like the carpets either, as they are a constant dust accumulator, hence having floor boards in the bedrooms. IMO, I'd rather put a rug into the areas where I want it, than having carpets through out. Currently Building in Bayside (Brighton East) Re: Tiles or wood? 17Nov 15, 2007 9:29 am I meant to say that we have carpet to bedrooms formal lounge and kids retreat (although almost regretting this as its a high traffic area). If money had not been an issue we would have put real wooden floors down as I think they are the best option but unfortunately money was a consideration. Re: Tiles or wood? 18Nov 15, 2007 9:30 am Timber in the kitchen (tiles are unforgiving on dropped plates etc), tiles throughout living areas as we have north facing windows and they catch sun in winter and warm the area, and carpets in bedrooms. We do have a couple of rugs over the tiles where the kids play. Re: Tiles or wood? 19Nov 15, 2007 10:20 am Vlad76 We don't like the carpets either, as they are a constant dust accumulator. Yes, and by collecting and holding the dust, carpet has been PROVEN to BENEFIT the indoor air quality in the home. Dust is inevitable, especially in bedrooms, (where we sleep, undress etc) as we shed skin constantly. This accumulates in the bed and clothes etc. This dust will constantly re-enter the airspace where hard floors are fitted, whereas a carpet holds it at or near the floor where it is less problematic, (as long as proper maintenance is applied). FACT: A well maintained carpet is as healthy a floorcovering as you can have! FACT 2: When proper maintenance is applied in each case, a carpet required far less frequent maintenance than hard floors. Ash. Re: Tiles or wood? 20Nov 15, 2007 10:41 am Being a pom, it's taken a while to get used to the concept of having tiles everywhere! We're going to go with carpet upstairs, and in the home theatre downstairs. The rest will be tiles as we've got two kids and I'm sure they'll trash a wooden floor.
