Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 16, 2010 9:34 pm Just wondering if anyone can give me some advice on what they would do in this situation; Our house (double story) has just been bricked in the wrong bricks. The bricks are similar but definetly not the same. We paid extra for our bricks we wanted. Should we ask for money back and if so, how much? or should we be asking for them to re do them? We are thinking of asking for money (compensation) because our house has been delayed by rain and we dont want to have to wait longer... thanks Re: Bricked up with the wrong bricks - what to do 2Sep 16, 2010 9:40 pm At the very least they should be compensating you the upgrade cost. If you dislike the bricks, I'd be asking for render at their cost and reimbursement for the upgrade cost. If you can live with them, I'd still expect the upgrade cost to be reimbursed. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Bricked up with the wrong bricks - what to do 3Sep 16, 2010 10:23 pm Well I was thinking a lot more then that! LOL I was thinking about $15k.... the reasons are, we picked and signed off on upgraded bricks, they have paid a brickies to brick up the house, if we get them to redo (they have to if we want them to) it will cost them the bricks they have used, the labour, demolishing them, dump fees for them the labour to pull them down, fixing up any damages done when pulling them down, then paying for new bricks and new labour... plus the loss of reputation..... we have spoken to fair trading and have sought some legal advice - we hope we can settled this quickly and easily but i wanted my bricks!! we didnt want a rendered house (plus we have heard bad stuff about them rendering as well, cutting costs and paint peeling in a couple of years) i guess we wanted to know other peoples opinion on compensation amounts because at the end of the day we need to ask for money or 'our' bricks thanks for your opinion, it all helps Re: Bricked up with the wrong bricks - what to do 5Sep 16, 2010 10:32 pm I very much doubt they'll give you monetary compensation beyond the reimbursement of the upgrade cost. They will redo it rather than compensate you because they won't want to set a precedent of paying people for stuff ups. It's happened a couple of times on the forum where the brick work is crapola.... they either pull it down and redo it or render it. You may get reumbirsed the upgrade cost, but I very much doubt anything beyond that. From what I've seen, if you push for compo, they just pull it down and redo it. I'd be very, very surprised if you got $15k. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Bricked up with the wrong bricks - what to do 6Sep 16, 2010 10:32 pm Id stick to your contract and ask for the bricks you paid for and signed off on. I love the bricks we chose and would want them. We paid nearly $4k to upgrade so i would want what i paid for Sleven Moved into our Atlantique MkII 36 by Carlisle Homes Re: Bricked up with the wrong bricks - what to do 7Sep 16, 2010 10:36 pm If they reimburse you, it'd most likely only be for the upgrade cost, it is VERY unlikely that they'd compensate you to the tune of $15k. There's two options really, get them all replaced, or ask for compensation. It depends how you feel about the bricks they've used, and also whether you're prepared to wait while they pull them down and redo it. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=37229 - our Iris 4! Re: Bricked up with the wrong bricks - what to do 8Sep 17, 2010 12:22 am elo to all, juz found this topic and it actually happened to us.. well the ******* brickwork changed to render! the builder only gave us two options, render or finance comp which is only equivalent of the material $5k.. not really want we need. We really wanted them to redo the brickwork n not render! now our house is totally different from wat we originally planned, but no other choice anymore as we really want to move in really soon. delay so far is a month behind. Re: Bricked up with the wrong bricks - what to do 9Sep 17, 2010 8:59 am If it happened to me and I was ok with the bricks used then I would take the upgrade cost, BUT I would also consider the builder to have a debt to me, and expect them to be more helpful than usual when other things go wrong. I would say "We accepted the wrong bricks, surely you can fix (insert other problem here) at your expense". There's definitely going to be issues later. If you don't like the bricks then that's another matter.. but if you are ok with them, consider that letting the builder get off easy here means you have leverage for all the other issues that will come up. Plus you won't be in a situation where the person building your house hates you Metricon Riva 33 - http://herlihy-riva.blogspot.com Site start 15/03/2010 - Handover 23/12/2010 9 months and 8 days (284 calendar days) from site start to handover Re: Bricked up with the wrong bricks - what to do 10Sep 17, 2010 11:05 pm Thanks everyone... I'm not sure if I like the bricks and we didnt want a rendered house. We thought $15k cos our neighbours had the same problem (same builder) and got $10k back... their house is a lot smaller then ours.... I'll let you know what we decide and what the builder does!
