Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 16, 2010 6:30 pm Hi everyone. I'm now doing some external work and would like to know what the expected cost would be for the standard timber merbau decking per square meter. I have a few quotes and they said the expected cost for decking (Materials and Installation) would be $400. This includes weed mat, pine posts, pine bearers? pine joists? and then the actual decking nailed. Would like to know if this is accurate. I think its overly priced. Your expert advice and professional experiences are valued and if you know anyone (recommend) please let me know if they are in the eastern suburbs of melbourne. Re: Average Cost of standard timber decking per square meter 2Sep 17, 2010 11:09 pm I had to ring a few places to get professional estimates when applying for a building permit for a deck. Estimate I was provided over the phone for a 30 square deck was around $250 - $300 per square. This was for turnkey (ie. design, construct). The actual material cost I am paying DIY per square is $105. This includes things like galvanised stirrups, pine bearers/joists, merbau decking, stainless screws, weedmat and multiple subsoil drains . Add $550 onto the job for a permit, there is a massive saving. It is "just" a deck, but having gone through the design, drafting of plans, permit, materials purchase (and soon building), there is a lot of work involved. If I had to, I would be happy to pay up to $300 per square. Hope this is sorta helpful. Re: Average Cost of standard timber decking per square meter 3Sep 17, 2010 11:29 pm If it helps from what I've read on here and from my own calculations, it costs approx $45 per sq metre for joists bearers and other associated below deck costs and approx $45 for actual decking, depending on width etc of decking used. So all up diy per metre is approx $90 - $100 There's quiet a few good threads on here that actually list a breakdown of prices and costs. I guess if your not confident to diy then you just have to accept that labour will add add a fairly large sum onto the cost. Re: Average Cost of standard timber decking per square meter 4Sep 21, 2010 2:42 pm Thanks for the advice. Can you point me in the direction of the other forums with the cost breakdowns. If I had time to learn and do the work, I would, but unfortunately I don't that that luxury. Although, I would like to learn. (I think bunnings has the DYI classes) Re: Average Cost of standard timber decking per square meter 5Sep 21, 2010 6:58 pm This is probably the post your looking for. viewtopic.php?f=17&t=3229 If you pm me your details, I would be happy to provide some construction drawings and accurate upto date costing for the deck I am building so you can see how it all relates. There are some very good external resources also with photos. (Google "Low Ironbark Deck" as a start). Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck?
