Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Bricks not the same? Comments please. 21Nov 14, 2007 6:09 pm They are Austral Cotham.
I got a message on my phone this morning saying that she (CSC) checked the paperwork and they are Cotham (which wasn't in dispute - it says it on the pallets), that the site supervisor went and had a look at them and believes they are the Cotham colours, and that they have contacted Austral and are waiting for their response. After looking at them today, I think they will look ok laid (after pulling more bricks out of the full pallets and lining them up). I'm just disappointed that the majority of the bricks are orange and not brown. And after paying $1300 extra for "those" bricks when I could have picked an orange blend from the standard range. A question to those that know - do the colours vary within a pallet or is the whole pallet the same? Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: Bricks not the same? Our bricks came with specific rows that were different colours, over two pallets (well, one pallet was pretty much the one colour, the other had a mix). IF your brickies blend them properly it should be alright. http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff151/melbournelyn/bricks3-1.jpg (With our bricks the striped side went on the inside) http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff151/melbournelyn/bricksblend.jpg Re: Bricks not the same? Comments please. 23Nov 14, 2007 9:15 pm Thanks Lyn. I noticed the diagram on the pallets but because I can't get to the bricks further down than the 2nd row at the moment (they're wrapped up) I can't tell if they are the same as the top row or not.
If they are different then we should be ok. Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: Bricks not the same? Comments please. 24Nov 15, 2007 7:32 am Also note that in the sample wall the mortar was white which will make a difference to the overall look. Is white mortar what you are getting? After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Re: Bricks not the same? Talk to your builder & maybe unpack half a pallet (with their permission). As muzzman said, the mortar will make a fair difference too. Re: Bricks not the same? Comments please. 26Nov 15, 2007 7:06 pm Our mortar is "off white" as opposed to "natural" but that is via the builder - not the brick company - so I'm not sure if it'll be the same or a bit different, but it should be more white than grey.
We were notified today that the bricking will commence Wednesday, and that the guy that is going to do our bricking (not sure if it's just him or his team) is "not the fastest, but he's the best" and that he is very meticulous with his blending... apparently it may take up to 3 weeks to brick. I just hope the claims are true. Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: Bricks not the same? Comments please. 28Nov 18, 2007 9:32 pm Ray,
I wouldnt worry if I were you. Our bricks looked very different on the pallet than what they now look like on the wall ! The other thing to remember with bricks is that they age and weather over time which will change their appearance ... also as brick is a product made of natural products (ie mud, dirt, etc) they do vary a little between batches. I'm no brickmaker or expert, but i'd say things like humidity, type of mud/rock, temperature, all affect the firing process and eventually the way the bricks look when complete. The display bricks should always be taken as an indication ... I'm sure you'll love the finished product when they are laid .. good luck with everything. Although I do think they have delivered the correct ones to you! Jimbo. Re: Bricks not the same? Comments please. 29Nov 18, 2007 10:27 pm Hi Ray,
Try to have chat with the brick layers before they start. Bring some beer/coke/cigarettes, and tell them what you "like to see", e.g. try not to use the grey one at the front, ...etc. Re: Bricks not the same? I just hope the claims are true. Ray. Ours took about 5-6 weeks, one reason is because of the weather, the other is there's only 2 people. Your builder will always tell you that you got the best brick layers, whether you believe it or not is up to you... Note that you might get a few other deliveries of bricks later as well, and we have heard that some bricks from different batches could have quite different colours... Make sure you check the site as frequent as possible, and during different times of the day to pick any possible problems/issues... It's better to get issues resolved early than having a heart attack when everything is done and you found half of the bricks are from different batch and in totally different colour.... Re: Bricks not the same? Comments please. 31Nov 29, 2007 9:11 am Thanks for all the replies. We did get the right bricks delivered, it was more a question of the display colour matching what we got. We decided there wasn't much we could do. If we insisted that they were different we would have had to go back and choose another brick (as the next batch would likely be the same) and would be holding up the process by probably another 6 weeks - if not more.
Well, bricking sterted yesterday (a week after they were supposed to), and from what I can see they are doing a good job of the blending. It's hard to tell just yet as to the overall appearance, but they look ok to us. Definitely more red than the displays but I don't necessarily hate it. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Ray. We have chosen Cotham also and I'm still in 2 minds, especially after reading your post! Do you have any finished pics?
