Like everyone else's mentioned, visiting a whole lot of display homes definitely helps as it shows you the builder's "best', but end of the day it's really worth talking to home owners and find out about their experiences. And definitely search on the forum as it has wealth of info. Although, from my personal experience I will add that small/medium sized builders tend to mould to your needs and provide more personal and individualised service. I may be biased as we chose not to go for the big companies but it was well worth it for us.
