Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 05, 2012 3:31 pm Just thought it would be interesting to see what living arrangements people have in place whilst they build their new home. I've heard of people living in sheds, caravans and granny flats. Then there's renting or even juggling the sale of your old house whilst the new one is built. My wife and I moved back in with her parents in October last year when we sold our old house to finance the new build. Almost coming up to 12 months living in a 4x3 bedroom in a one bathroom house with 2 smelly cattle dog X. 95% of our stuff is in storage and I am starting to miss my own stuff. Hasn't been easy - most of the time it feels like I'm a stranger in the house, but the financial gain by having this opportunity far outweighs having to deal with my mother-in-law on a daily basis. So what's your story? Re: What are your living arrangements whilst you build? 2Sep 05, 2012 4:04 pm hi atom, we are one of the lot you hear about living in sheds . we are building on 10 acres, so are fortunate to be able to do this. we have a large shed area, about 12m x 10m that we use for our living, laundry area. then we have an ex mining donga which we have a bedroom, kitchen, shower + toilet, and then we have a caravan for more sleeping arrangements. And we have a storage area of about 10m x 5m attached to the shed for all our stuff. its not too bad. has its moments where i feel like im pulling my hair out. get so sick of the dirt and dust all the time [i love having a clean house, so this has been really hard for me]. The 'wildlife' ie mice, and bugs and creepy crawlies, dont bother me at all. But its is rather cramped for 5 of us - 2 adults, 2 teenagers and a toddler. But i love to see the kids just be able to go out and kick or hit a ball as hard as they like, or just wander off down the back and just be kids in the most basic sense. financially its great as we dont have to worry about renting. and we arent on a 'time scale' that the build 'must be' finished by a certain time coz we have to get out of a rental. although it certainly has been trying at times, i would do it the same way again if i had to. This is certainly a luxury that I also enjoy. Having done it all before, I know that building is not an easy process - but not having those worries about leasing and timeframes makes me a bit more relaxed about the process, so that when something doesn't happen when its supposed to its not too stressful. Re: What are your living arrangements whilst you build? 4Sep 05, 2012 4:53 pm We sold our home and are one of those statistics renting! We have taken a 12 month lease out we are 5 months in and the house is on the cusp of
Starting, hopefully we can extend the lease if need be. We could of moved in with my parents but my dad got diagnosed with cancer and I could not think of anything worse for him then a few kids screaming down the hall on a bad day Looking back now though, I do Wish we had other options besides renting, not to have to pay that big chunk Per month would be nice. Re: What are your living arrangements whilst you build? 5Sep 05, 2012 5:01 pm We are living in a rental. Our house sale and land purchase went through on the same day due to a fixed mortgage. We were going to live on the block in a shed in our caravan, but thought it wouldn't work with the two kids. Our next plan was to move into our investment property, however as the tenants said they wanted to stay there long term, we thought we would move into a rental to save up-rooting them. They gave us notice to move next door 3 weeks after we moved. I hate renting - our rental is tiny and crappy. I am counting the days until we give notice Re: What are your living arrangements whilst you build? 6Sep 05, 2012 5:12 pm We also rented. Our house sold as soon as we put it on the market and the rental availability in our area was limited at the time so we were very lucky to get a small, old house to rent....fast fwd 18 months and we were so glad to move into our new house...really made us appreciate the space and newness. I really dislike rent inspections - I am a perfectionist and hate being judged, so it get's very stressful around here every 3 months :0 What are your living arrangements whilst you build? 8Sep 05, 2012 9:07 pm We are living with my parents, which financially was too good an offer to refuse, but definitely has its drawbacks. We're 4 adults, a toddler and a dog in a house built for empty nesters, hubby has an 80 minute commute, and personal space is a distant memory! We moved in in February following the sale of our old house, and fingers crossed will be back in our own place in October. Re: What are your living arrangements whilst you build? 9Sep 05, 2012 9:39 pm We have always rented until we purchased our block of land. 3 months ago we moved in with my parents. My husband, I, and 3 kids 7, 5 and 2. Whilst it definitely is hard, we will be forever grateful for them giving us this oppurtunity as without it we couldn't build.
