Forum Building A New House 1 Aug 27, 2010 6:36 am Hi all, Just finished doing colours and electrical with Pl@ntation and cannot get over the prices ! I want to lay Cat 6 cables all over the house, mainly for networking and they want $3k to do it !! I reckon I can do it for a 5th of the price ! We are building a two storey, can I get on at the weekend a run the cables with no one knowing ? Or do I chuck the sparky some $$$ on site and ask him to run it with the electrical cable ? Oz Re: Cabling new two storey with Plntn 2Aug 27, 2010 7:37 am Also building with P H. We were told they wouldn't do CAT6. SO we went with CAT5. We have 6 data and 3 TV Points. Total cost = $1,350 approx. I can't see how you would lay cable without anyone noticing. I would talk to the sparky and see if there is anything he can do. The handback was originally because we were doing the electric for the AC independent of PH but our SS was aware that we did the network cabling as well. It wasn't a problem. I had 16 cat6 points throughout the house, patch panel under the stairs, 3 TV points, 3 phone points and an HDMI cable from family room to alfresco layed by our cable guy for around $2K. My brother-in-law used to do this for a living, but because he didn't have a current 'card' he wasn't allowed on site to do it cheaply for us. I had to provide Henley with the details of our 'chosen' cable guy, so I'd be careful if you decide to do them yourself. If the SS sees them (and blue cables around the walls are pretty easy NOT to miss!!), you may find the SS ripping them out if they are not covered by the contract, or you haven't provided details of who has installed them. You are not 'supposed' to be on site, and IF, on the off chance, something happened to you whilst carrying out the illegal work, then who is going to pay your hospital bills? M can do it. From memory it was around $130 per data point for cat6, only a little less for cat5. The price includes the cable, socket at one end and the termination in the broom cupboard. We got 3 sockets only, the rest we will handle with wireless. Re: Cabling new two storey with Plntn 8Aug 27, 2010 5:04 pm $3k for a 2 story house is very reasonable.... people keep on fogetting you are also paying for the techs Knowledge, and support for this project.. and also DIY Cabling is Ilegal.. plus the above comments of any injury and such you won't be covered for OH&S, as well as have no Public Libilty insurence... it isn't your house techincally till handover..... Much harder on inside walls unless you know exactly where the holes are and if they go through… 1 275 I'm a carpenter there are good reasons not to go up, 1) probably cost around 25% more than anything you can build at ground level if not more depending on the engineering… 2 507 |
