Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 01, 2012 11:24 pm Gday. I'm about to start building a house that has posts and a sub-floor (about 75cm off the ground) instead of a slab, mainly due to council overland flow requirements. The builder is including timber battens around the outside of the subfloor area, but they aren't including anything to cover the dirt under the house. I am a bit concerned about water pooling, erosion under the house from drainage flow, and the general thought of just having dirt under the house. I presumed that some kind of gravel or even low grade concrete would be used in this case? Has anyone got any suggestions / experience here? Cheers, Mick. Re: What to put underneath subfloor 2Feb 02, 2012 8:49 am Most builders would leave bare, the ground is normally scraped so as to ensure that there is an even slope ie. no pooling of water. You want something cheap and easy, maybe crushed metal dust. I would stay away from gravel otherwise access under there would be painful. Otherwise leave the good old dirt, the builder will scrape most topsoil off so the surface should be reasonable. The most likely cause of your timber swelling (parquetry?) is either a plumbing leak or carelessly leaving water on floors after use or both.
