Browse Forums Building A New House Re: What bricks did you choose - Show and Tell 221Jun 07, 2017 9:30 am Tip for everyone. Was recently talking to a brickie at the estate we are building in. When I told him we were using natural mortar, he said good. The builders won't tell you but the off white mortar goes off (sets) quicker. You can get hairline cracks as a result. I suppose it depends on how long it takes for the brickies to use a batch of the mortar once they have mixed it up. Re: What bricks did you choose - Show and Tell 222Jun 07, 2017 7:11 pm Thanks for the tip. I contacted the supplier (I was concerned as I'm using the off white) who is providing the sand/cement and they advised during summer it could be an issue but not throughout winter. Building with Rawdon Hill - Denmark 326 In Yarragon Re: What bricks did you choose - Show and Tell 223Aug 29, 2017 5:15 pm Just wondering if anyone has built with Austral Buckwheat. We leaning towards it, but cannot find much images for builds in these. If you have any pics of builds in Buckwheat - please post/share Re: What bricks did you choose - Show and Tell 224Aug 29, 2017 7:15 pm Becs Coral We have used PGHs Eclipse. We were very lucky to get our brick of choice in the standard range before it was discontinued. They were just finished being cleaned yesterday to will need to get some more pics. We wanted a black brick and love them, although in some lights they throw off a brownish tinge. We have eclipse too and they haven't cleaned them yet. We are just over a week from our final walk through. They did the clean of the bricks only a week or so after they finished bricking. It came up pretty good at that point. After a little while some of them got an orangey look to them. Apparently it is sometimes a reaction to the acid wasn't. They have since come back and cleaned it with something that reverses the oranging! OK. They haven't cleaned ours at all. You can see how bad they look in this pic. We opted for Austral Char Bricks. We have a lot of cracked and chipped bricks which are a beveled not a straight cut like the sample bricks we were shown. We’ve also gone with off white mortar which really makes the brickwork pop out. As it turns out we have about a 15% wastage amount due to defective quality and finish. A lot of the supplied bricks do not conform to current standards and are not suitable for laying both structurally and aesthetically. Fortunately we were allowed to use our own brickie who is fussy and won’t lay defective bricks even though the supplier claims they are within tolerance standards. They are clearly defective. Anyway for anyone going for a dark painted face brick, be sure that you have a really good brickie, as they are harder to lay due to there colour and to hide chips etc. Also they more prone to scaring during the acid cleaning proces post laying. Overall though they do look great and we have, and are constantly getting people telling us and our brickie how good they look. Also our builder is having all the wasted bricks sorted out after addressing our dissatisfaction for a sub standard product in which we are paying a premium for. Even though we won’t be using Austral for our next build either as they obviously don’t care, but that’s another story... We”re thinking of choosing this brick for our new build. Would love to see some pics. Hi there, Don’t have any picks for you though when we went to our local austral bricks agent they gave us address to go and check out certain new builds as so we could see the outcome ourselves. In addition we too were initially considering Iron though we decided on Char instead. It was a hard voice as they’re both great colours. Just make sure you keep an eye and stay on top of your building site supervisor to ensure the batch of bricks you get are not defective. We had to replace a large percentage of ours as per my previous post. All the best! Re: What bricks did you choose - Show and Tell 234Jul 19, 2018 10:27 pm Hi Gran Sasso, thanks for replying. Your house looks amazing, we love Char too and initially chose it as our brick but we’re building a double story house so I just felt it would be too much dark brick. I know what you mean re defective bricks, Austral gave me a couple of addresses to see the brick and one of the houses looks like it was built with a lot of defective bricks, there were red chips throughout them and they look quite brown in direct sunlight which is quite different from what the sample brick looks like. My other dilemma was which mortar colour to go with, natural or off white? They looked quite similar to me. Thanks for the tip, this is our first time building, so will take all the advice we can get. Thanks again Re: What bricks did you choose - Show and Tell 235Jul 20, 2018 12:12 am Hi Frankie, The hope all goes well with your build. Can’t stess how important it is to ensure you have a good brickie especially with a painted face brick like the Australian Industrial Range. Overall they are all nice colours and mix together too. Just keep a eagle eye on things. I’ve seen a lot of homes with these bricks and as you said, many have chips let alone being laid unevenly via substandard brickies. Some will lay chipped and cracked bricks and some won’t, hopefully you’ll get one that takes pride in their work and cares. PM if you are in Vic and want a our brickies details. Re: What bricks did you choose - Show and Tell 236Jul 20, 2018 8:30 pm We went with PGH Naturals 'Desert Sands' and PGH Naturals 'Eclipse' for the dark feature brick. All were in the standard range however we went with the off-white mortar all round. We're in the process of selecting bricks and I am seriously tearing my hair out about what to pick (period home so main colour and a contrast course through the centre). I keep going back to the Daniel Robertson ranges. Any advice appreciated! Build insta: https://www.instagram.com/ourtreechangebuild/ No the fireplace doesn’t work. It’s been enclosed.
