Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 13, 2010 4:44 pm Hi everyone I am new here building our first new home with the wife, just got quick question there are gaps on the side of our windows which you can see clearly and you can also see the frame. Our SS said that they are going to fix it by putting some metal pieces on it. Shouldnt they get a bigger window to make it fit perfectly. The gap is around 4 to 8 mm I would appreciate heaps if you have experience anything or have any comments. Thank you Re: Gap between the window and bricks(side) 2Aug 13, 2010 4:51 pm vincent337 Hi everyone I am new here building our first new home with the wife, just got quick question there are gaps on the side of our windows which you can see clearly and you can also see the frame. Re: Gap between the window and bricks(side) 4Aug 13, 2010 4:57 pm thanks for the reply, but it is on 3 windows and one of the window it only has the gap on one side. So if they put the infill its not gonna be even. Cant I ask them to get a new window? The gap is actually not 8 mm its more like 10 to 15 mm ahhhhhhhhhhhhh Re: Gap between the window and bricks(side) 5Aug 13, 2010 5:39 pm 10 to 15 mm is nothing. You can ask them to reposition the window to be in the middle, so that the gap is on both sides and is equal. In that case the 2 gaps will be tiny, barely noticeable. Perhaps too tiny, so maybe they wouldn't do it beacause maybe it's hard for them to get such narrow piece of alum. (Like Ed said, they cover it with the same alum piece like the window frames.) Now imagine a 40mm gap ... My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Gap between the window and bricks(side) 6Aug 13, 2010 5:56 pm So how did they fix that gap you got, mines got 15mm both sides on two windows and on sliding door, i think it's the bricklayers fault so why should we suffer Re: Gap between the window and bricks(side) 7Aug 13, 2010 7:52 pm Like Ed and I said, they cover it with the same alum piece like the window frames. Yes, it's the bricklayers' fault, but they will argue that it's better for us, rather than the bricklayers having to - god forbid - cut a small number of bricks neatly in a tiny bit over a half - why not just lay them the other way around and cut them anyhow. I also heard of a toll called brick/masonry saw, but I suppose it's the least used item in mass building. Edit - spelling!! it's tool, not toll, of course My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Gap between the window and bricks(side) 8Aug 14, 2010 9:28 am Ok thanks , but I would still insist on getting a new window if possible. Fingers cross it will happen. Re: Gap between the window and bricks(side) 9Aug 14, 2010 9:59 am vincent337 Ok thanks , but I would still insist on getting a new window if possible. Fingers cross it will happen. I am sure you won't get a new window. The costs would be huge. Non-standard window + internal walls & architraves. And the window would in any case need to be made undersized to retrofit into the brick opening. If your plaster isn't finished, ask them to centre the window and caulk the sides to the brickwork. Ed Hi Ed - we're got similar issues, small gaps on the sides/above windows. We have aluminium windows and it looks like the builder has used timber/wood infills which haven' been painted yet. Should aluminium windows have aluminium infills to match (is there any specific regulation pertaining to this?) Thanks Ed! Powdercoated aluminium is easy and never needs maintenance. None of my customers use timber. Aluminium is readily available in matching colours.
