Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 13, 2010 10:59 am Hi all, I posted here ages ago when we had just signed up for our land, but it has taken ages for our house to sell. We are FINALLY moving forward!! Here are some key stats for our build: Land settles - 6th September 2010 Land: An acre, Teviot Downs, New Beith, Brisbane Builder: Hallmark Homes House: Flair 253 (will post house plans once we get the finals back from the builder, but for now... http://www.hallmarkhomes.com.au/house-plans.php?id=41) We have just submitted our final changes through to our builder and will be doing our colour selection over the next couple of weeks. This is our second build through Hallmark and they were fantastic last time. A little about me: I'm happily married with two little girls (3yrs and 9 months ). I'm an accountant and just do a few hours a day from home around the kids' schedules. I have two dogs, a budgie and a couple of horses and cattle at a little hobby farm we have out near Toowoomba. I love this forum, am always on here for advice and ideas. Look forward to sharing my build with you all!!! Are you on a big block already or is this a big change for you? We are on 700 sqm at the moment, so the acre will be blissful. Our last house was on a 430 sqm block, so we thought 700 was big, but DH is into cars, I have two dogs and we have our girls so the backyard just seemed too small. Emma, This is our 4th build (and final!) - our first was on a block 580 sq m, our second on 1900 and our 3rs on just under 1100....so we've had a fair cross representation of sizes! It would be great to have the amount of land that you have with your little farm Re: Emma's build! Our own acre of paradise. :) 9Aug 16, 2010 9:47 am im on an acre too!!! whaoaoao! (4235 sq mets to be anal) welcome to home one. Re: Emma's build! Our own acre of paradise. :) 10Aug 16, 2010 10:10 am Aww thanks guys! Feeling very welcome! I'm hoping we will get our revised floor plans in a couple of weeks, will definitely post them asap. We have our colour selection appointment on 25th August so I'm still just finalising a few things and tossing and turning over some of the finer details like: - We are doing a cream brick, and brown roof/gutters. Should we pay the extra and get the off white mortar? I think it makes a big difference but DH doesn't see the value (but as long as he gets his shed he is happy for me to do whatever I like in the house ) - Not sure whether to get stone benchtops. Upgrade is $3545 for 20mm. Hoping to be able to make them have the 40mm bullnose edges for not too much more, but if it is more than an extra $500 we won't do the 40mm. Does 20mm look good enough to do the upgrade? - I really want a white kitchen, but with 2 kids (and eventually probably 1 more), is this a suicide mission?? We have timber look laminate at the moment and it is very forgiving with finger marks. I was hoping for a gloss white for the cupboards. - regardless of whether we go stone or laminate I was going to go with a lighter benchtop too (something white with flecks through it). Do these stain easily though? Hmmmm, sure I'll have heaps more questions. Happy to hear all the feedback - good/bad and ugly! Our own acre of paradise. :) 11Aug 16, 2010 10:17 am cant comment on much (as not in oz) but your kids will be bigger soon, and until then if you want white...just wipe it down (often!) I have seen white kitchens on here (in show me your kitchen) with kids and they look awesome. sure....until they stop spilling tom sauce down the cupboards etc it is a pain...but a clean white kitchen..you cant beat it ay! and you can then just sit in it once they all go to school and pat yourself on the back you got what you wanted. (I do agree, wood laminate is forgiving re fingers, but once they are walking properly you wont have finger prints on the cupboards...just spilt cordial etc which would show on wood anyway) Re: Emma's build! Our own acre of paradise. :) 12Aug 20, 2010 6:31 pm Thanks Kiwi! You have restored my excitement for a white kitchen! Jessie87 - thanks, yes we have 440 acres that we went halves with my Dad to buy, it is really lovely. I grew up with horses and I wanted the same for my girls. Our update - settlement on our current house is 17 September, and I have secured our rental to move into from 10 September on a half acre at Jimboomba, so at least we will be on a bigger block and get the taste of the space ready for our move! Colour selection is next Wednesday and I'm going loopy trying to pre-pick everything. Our own acre of paradise. :) 14Aug 20, 2010 7:32 pm Well I went out and had a look at the brick display centre today and I really loved the off white mortar with our bricks so we are keeping that in, and so far the caesarstone kitchen bench is still in too. DH is getting his 7 bay shed so he is pretty much letting me do whatever I want with the house. Hmmmm will keep the kidney in mind.... Our own acre of paradise. :) 15Aug 20, 2010 7:37 pm Emma - I have a white gloss 2pac kitchen with 3 kidlets under 5. It is all good - at least with the gloss things tend to "slide" down the doors rather then stick. A good microfibre cloth cleans them brilliantly. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Emma's build! Our own acre of paradise. :) 16Aug 20, 2010 8:59 pm ^^^^Am taking note of the microfibe cloth as my cupboards are white gloss and with 3 grandsons under the age of 4 by the time we move in..... Do these stain easily though? I love the clean look of a white kitchen, so we put in a white gloss 2pac kitchen when our youngest of 3 was only a year old and the middle child was 2.5 years. So easy to wipe all the sticky fingers and lick marks (yes, we have a licker ) off the shiny surface. I also had the microwave under bench, but had an off switch put in the powerpoint that was above it on the benchtop, so I just switched it off at the wall and woohoo, they lost interest in 'posting' stuff in there. Did the same for the dishwasher as our son loved to constantly turned it on. So I say, go for it. ~ trying to build our dream home by the sea ~ Re: Emma's build! Our own acre of paradise. :) 18Aug 21, 2010 6:51 am Thanks guys! I'm definitely hooked on the white kitchen now. Just got to pick the c/s colour (somewhere in the whites as well I think) and organise whether to have an undermount sink. I love the look of them but the chipping is worrying me (especially since DH often does the dishes and isn't the most gentle guy with his big clumsy fingers...)
