Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 08, 2010 10:02 pm Decided to start a new thread for the post-handover phase (thanks for the inspiraton Erin!!) so if you didn't watch my build, here is the link to the build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=23660 We moved in 10wks ago and the house is definitely looking lived in. Slowly cleaning out the garage of the last boxes of random stuff and large cardboard rubbish, and just waiting on the damn rain to stop so we can start the next and most exciting project: the yard!! We are getting a deck built out the family sliding door which will be pretty huge, 4.5x4.5 m square, plus another couple of metres to the right in front of the meals area also. Depending on the costs, we're hoping to get the pergola done at the same time, if not we will leave til closer to summer. We are then going to level off the rest of the yard a bit lower, so have a few wide steps down to the grassed yard area for kids to play (the triangular bit in the picture). This is our backyard currently: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v444/cazoraz/P5230095.jpg We will also be finishing off the dead side of the house which now has a retaining wall the entire length, and just needs to have a drain pipe dug in and the ground levelled out a bit so we can chuck some crushed rock down too. Today I got to make my first big purchase and one of the last things to finish off the kitchen: the dishwasher!! After some serious research and of course a poll on HomeOne, we went with the Bosch 15place built-under dishwasher with cutlery tray. Got a great deal at Clive Anthony's and it should be here within 3wks (on back order). Here are some pics in the mean time: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v444/cazoraz/boschdishwasher.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v444/cazoraz/boschcutlerydrawer.jpg Have my step-dad coming out this week to measure up for the deck and work everything out, so fingers crossed this milder non-rainy weather continues!!! I love your backyard, just love it. So your pergola will be to the left of where the kids are in the triangle of grass? If you put it exactly where the kids *are* playing, would you automatically create some additional privacy in that corner from your neighbours higher on the slope and to the right?? Or have you figured out a better way to screen this? Just wondering what your thought processes were with planning this ~ as we now have a 'vacant' cleared spot in our back right corner as well... I had nominated the future cubby (or fort or something) to go there but still don't know where we can exactly put a pergola.. ~ cheers, J _______________________________________________________________ We're a knockdown | rebuild ~ Melb SE burbs Building modified version of the Fairhaven Glenaire Homeone thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=28429 _______________________________________________________________ Re: Caz's Atherton-settling in thread :) 3Aug 09, 2010 12:33 pm Sorry, should've explained this better. Decking will be out the door of where I am taking the photo, extending out abour 4.5m, so covering most the dirt part before the grass where the kids are. All the grassed area where the kids are will be levelled out and turfed for the kids to run amock on, and we'll do a vegie patch and a cubby house in there somewhere. We are going to plant a few trees along that right hand fenceline where we need some more privacy from my neighbours, but cant do it til we've levelled the yard more cos we need access to the yard through the fence for the bobcat...... I think we're at the same stage as you guys... decided we will do the deck (originally decided on decking, then changed to paving, now back to decking). Will deck first, then do the pergola over summer. LOVE the dishwasher! I'd been doing dishes by hand here until the last few days, just love having a dishwasher again Keep the pics coming! Sounds the same as us Erin, think we will only be able to do the deckfor now so I can afford the friveway too, will do the pergola in a few months I reckon. And it started yesterday!! Asked my stepdad to come round and measure up - which he did, but also started! He's back today despite the **** weather (YAY for stepdads ) and out there now doing the ground posts. It looks huge!! Going to take pics shortly Caz & Co ALL MOVED IN!! Now comes all the hard work-decorating.... All we are waiting on is the Merbau now, my stepdad thinks he should have it done by Tuesday or Wednesday as long as it doesn't completely bucket down on him The deck is going out 4m from the sliding door, is 4.7m wide and also another 3m across in front of the meals area window off to the right. should be heaps of space for the table & chairs, BBQ, kids to play, etc. We are going to have 2 big wide steps down to the yard which we're then going to level out a bit too. I'm also getting stepdad to build me a box seat to have off to the left hand side that I can store cushions in but also sit on top. (minus the big wide steps - but my Step-dad had to fly off on holidays to Bali, damn him! ) So here are some pics, it looks lovely this colour but no its not oiled, just very very wet : Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The kids are loving playing on it! Off to Bunnings tomorrow for some deck oil and will be doing that if its not raining *fingers crossed* Once step-dad is back, we're doing big wide steps around two sides, the far right which is about 2m wide, and half of the entire length which is about 4m wide. I want them wide enough that you can sit down on them and have some big pot plants on the ends. Step-dad is also going to build me a box seat with hinged lid for storing the cushions in which will be along the left hand side (only side with no steps). YAY for decks!! Caz & Co ALL MOVED IN!!
