Browse Forums Building A New House Re: M&J's Building thread- Brickwork photos pg 2 61Aug 31, 2010 8:57 pm Dee- I'm not sure exactly how old the kids were but I'd say probably about 10 years old. I know its none of my business but it did concern me that there were three kids playing together unsupervised. When I sent them on their way they went running to one child's home. It was this child's Mum that I spoke to (and she didn't get home until almost 6pm which I only know because I drove past the house a couple of times waiting for her to get home) Obviously her circumstances don't allow her to be home when school finishes (which I guess is her business) but having 'extra' kids at her house when she isn't there is a bit of a concern. I can't help wondering whether the other kids parents know that there is no-one at home and if they do wouldn't it make sense to keep their kids at home where they could supervise them or perhaps even invite the 'unsupervised' child to their house every now and again rather than allowing their kids to go to the home of the 'unsurpervised' kid......It becomes less of a surprise that I stumbled across them "making mischief" on our block. I think we've picked out a nice door (pics on the first page) It will be a double door with the bevelled flower glass panels but I'm not sure they will be very prominent from the front of the house as the portico is quite 'deep'. We will also be 'staining' them so I'm not sure that the wood finish will stand out against the red bricks. I was actually thinking along the same lines as you- to render the whole thing in something that works with the woodland grey of the roof (but think it may take a little more to convince my husband) I guess it is one of those things that we can take our time to decide on... perhaps we might get a better idea of how things will look when the roof/ gutters/ fascia goes on. I too was rather surprised at how red they looked- Such a gloomy rainy day....and such bright red bricks (They don't look that bold in real life) The grass will grow....eventually.......it is just going to take a bit of love and care! LOL! It is still pouring outside. Our 'castle' even has it's own 'moat' at the moment LOL! Re: M&J's Building thread- Brickwork completed (page 3) 67Sep 12, 2010 3:16 pm This week has seen the guys down at our house starting the roof framework. I went past on the first day and snapped a shot of them making a start Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Apparently they had to put a temporary mezzanine floor to hold their ladders so that they could reach LOL! One of the carpenters told us that for 50 grand more we could have put a great big room up there. Grand idea......... If only we had a money tree! Perhaps at some point we might install one of those manholes with the drop down ladder and use the area for storage space! Hmm! The mind boggles at the possibilities Here are some more shots from later in the week. There's still more to go....but it is still great to see the roof starting to take shape Front of house Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Portico Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Standing inside looking out to alfresco from main living area Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Inside looking out to alfresco from games/ multipurpose room Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Back of house Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: M&J's Building thread- Roof framework LOTS of pics on pa 68Sep 12, 2010 3:30 pm Oh and the markout for electrical work is well underway too! Even if it is some old chipboard etc and just store it up there for now. You have quite a large headspace in the middle there..would have made a great loft room! have the attic ladder going into that space, then you can stand as you rummage around for a suitcase looking fab, nearly done! Too True Kiwi- Good tip! It didn't dawn on me until after I typed it that it would probably be a good idea to get that sort of thing sorted out BEFORE the roof was on! Of course- Hubby had already figured it out but so much running through my head and money fast running out- the obvious didn't cross my mind. We'll see what we can do. Like you've said- some sort of sheets (Even if not laid out) neeed to go up there! Quote: You have quite a large headspace in the middle there..would have made a great loft room! have the attic ladder going into that space, then you can stand as you rummage around for a suitcase Yep definitely quite a large headspace! Don't quote me on this but I 'think' the space from the ceiling to the roof top is a smidge higher than the space from the floor to the ceiling- LOL! catjim said Quote: Fabulous alfresco area We think it is coming along- hopefully it will look nice when its finished Deemaree said Quote: ^^ +1! ^^^ brb_654 said Quote: what an incredible Alfresco Someone going to be doing a lot of entertaining!! Not too impressed that one of the carpenters chipped a brick right on the front today! Already contacted the SS and he is going to check it out tomorrow (hopefully) Well they made a start on the fascia today and I was really disapponted to see that nearly EVERY length has a scratch on it. It is almost as if it was damaged while in its packing or something as the scratch is in approx the same place in every length. My Husband spoke with the site supervisor this afternoon who said that they normally just touch it up. I'm not impressed about this as the whole reason we go colorbond was for durability and I don't want the colorbond to weather differently to the touched up areas! ARGH! Well done! Thanks Herbiecat! The red dirt makes for interesting times sometimes (includng white clothes looking more pink than white after a couple of wears) Kiwi- you would be thrilled to know we have grass attempting to grow in the backyard (plus a few weeds for good measure) It is a shame that it will all get removed when the yard is levelled properly! Well- we were supposed to have the colourbond start on Tuesday however we are still patiently waiting. It is probably a good thing- My husband was doing some work in the roof framework and found a few things we're not happy with. He spoke with the Site Supervisor yesterday afternoon and walked him through the things we want fixed up and apparently the carpenters have been called in to fix it tomorrow. Apparently they were griping about me requesting a minor change in window size after they started the framework. I doubt they will be impressed that there are a number of things we want corrected. I guess most people don't climb through their roof framework and would never know what the roof framework is like before the colourbond and gyprock goes on. (It wasn't anything you could easily see from the ground) At the end of the day it is our home and our money paying for it and we want a good job done! Simple as that! I believe the Anticon is being delivered at 8am this morning so keep your fingers crossed it doesn't rain today! (and I've just looked out the window and what do you know- it looks really gloomy....after having such glorious weather lately! Typical!) Hopefully I'll be able to share my colourbond moment soon!
