Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 08, 2010 2:19 pm We're getting to the business end of the decision making and have two favourite bricks, very different but equally beautiful Who has used either of these type of bricks and can you post pics of your different colour combinations (eg brick, roof, front door & garage door). Such a big decision! Have a look at the other Melbourne series bricks as Cotham can also look good, maybe a touch too much red/orange for some tastes though. Here's our house in Hawthorn brick, the garage door should be on this week, it'll be surfmist to match the fascia. They are a cat6 upgrade with PD. We got told it was about $6k extra on a single story 30sq home. We didn't do it and chose a brick that has turned out great and we spent the money elsewhere. Hmmm, decisions decisions. thanks for that. Re: Bricks, can't decide Austral Hawthorn or Newport? 10May 29, 2011 5:00 pm We upgraded to Blackwood with Bentley Homes 27.4 squares, cost us about $480.00, Hawthorn were in Cat 3 so I'm thinking they wouldn't have been to much more. That's alot, isn't it 6 grand? Find out from Austral how much extra a brick they are, allthough you don't know how many bricks your house is, but ask them if the house was 30square how much extra would it cost to upgrade. I am ringing them tomorrow, went and inspected some hawthorns and compared to the homestead tan (on real houses not displays) the hawthorns were fantastic. But CAT6 with PD means bigtime dollars (and this is on a prestige house! grr!) Re: Bricks, can't decide Austral Hawthorn or Newport? 12May 30, 2011 9:30 am Ok so I rang Austral.. this is VERY interesting. Homestead Tan Price Per Brick 0.97c Hawthorn Price Per Brick $1.09c Now based on my rough calcs, there are about 11,000 bricks in a 30sq house. So it shouldnt be anymore then then 1.5k (rough) Re: Bricks, can't decide Austral Hawthorn or Newport? 13May 30, 2011 9:48 am humble Ok so I rang Austral.. this is VERY interesting. That is unless Austral are charging PD a 180% markup. Re: Bricks, can't decide Austral Hawthorn or Newport? 15May 30, 2011 11:29 am Our bricks were Cat 2, Newport and Hawthorn were Cat 6 Cat 2 upgrade costs on our home = $1040 Looking at those figures Cat 6 at $5k or $6k would be about right I would think, even if Austral only charge .12c, PD set their own prices. I found that out with my kitchen also, just lucky for me they installed the wrong kitchen and I got my PD priced $4k upgrade kitchen for free My building thread : viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36059 Paid initial deposit 24/7/10 Tender appointment 20/8/2010 Flooring and tile appointment 25/9/10 Colour and Electrical appointment 13/9/10 December site start delayed Site start (YAY!) 17/1/11 Slab pour 1/2/2011 Re: Bricks, can't decide Austral Hawthorn or Newport? 17May 30, 2011 11:42 am humble... They can and they do. They do it with everything. With our carpet (cat3), BB were charging us $12,500 for it thru them but ended up canceling cause I went to their supplier and could get everything the same for $7,000. So we decided to spend that $12,500 with carpet co#rt but got top of the range carpet and underlay. Even the manager of carpet co#rt stated that builders will even sometimes charge twice the cost. OP, We desp wanted the Hawthorn bricks for our house but being 2 story, the upgrade was around $5000 - $6000 with BB. So we decided on Homestead tan. They only cost us $1860 to go from cat 1 to cat 3 bricks. Happy with them but still wish we got the hawthorn bricks. BUT as DH pointed out, the money we didnt spend on hawthorn bricks, I have been allowed to spend on furniture.lol Oh and a projector. Edited spelling mistakes. I can offer many examples. Our tiles floor and wall tiles were RRP $32sqm and we got no rebate for upgrading, we basically bought all new tiles and PD keep the ones on their standard range that they would otherwise be laying in our home. Our kitchen vinyl wrap upgrade cost was about $4k but I spoke to a guy that installs kitchens and he told me a kitchen of my size to upgrade to vinyl wrap from laminex was about $1k PD told us we need a "corner treatment" because of the way our house sits, for this they wanted to charge about $3k and honestly in materials it would be about $500 Our front door RRP $850, they charge $1841 and that is NOT including the feature glass, they also charge extra for staining. etc etc My building thread : viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36059 Paid initial deposit 24/7/10 Tender appointment 20/8/2010 Flooring and tile appointment 25/9/10 Colour and Electrical appointment 13/9/10 December site start delayed Site start (YAY!) 17/1/11 Slab pour 1/2/2011 Re: Bricks, can't decide Austral Hawthorn or Newport? 19May 30, 2011 11:47 am Rudolf1980 humble... Which I am sure consumer affairs would love to hear about. Same goes for tiles, roof tiles, carpet, wood, anything, they MUST credit you back the original price. If thats the case, whats the point of choosing a volume builder? I may as well build the house myself.. I thought this would be a popular question but I haven't been able to find any similar posts.
