Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 01, 2010 6:15 pm Hi Guys,
I live in North Victoria, my house is on the market so I thought I'd get the ball rolling with Dennis Family Homes by paying my $1000 deposit. I'm a divorce mum with 2 teenage kids and can see that the Columbia will suit our needs perfectly. I've made a couple of changes to the standard plan, one being that I am adding a door in the kitchen/entrance where the bulk head is currently. That way I can enjoy peace as the my kids and their friends are at the other end of the house I'm also extending the kitchen bench by 600mm. Other modifications include *deleting voids and adding sliding doors on robes. *banks of shelves in each robe *extra shelves in WIR *moving bed 2 window *larger bathroom window and frosted glass to ensuite, bathroom and toilet (saves on blinds too) *wall oven/microwave oven/pot drawer tower *a set of pot drawers to replace a cupboard *about 6 extra double power points (including one outside) *overhead cupboards in kitchen. *narrowed the walls each side of the kitchen to make fridge cavity wider. *laminate cupboard with stainless trough in laundry and overhead shelving *changing the sliding door in the family to a double slider - entertainer door. Which will also be handy for moving furniture through! *extra light points on front of portico, over kitchen bench and spotlight at rear of house *a bank of drawers in each bathroom vanity unit. *moved the door in the garage and added a window to the garage. *2 single windows in lounge and all 4 front windows tinted. *garage light to have 2 way switch in garage *wiring for ceiling fans in bedrooms and "tastic" in bathroom. I think that about covers it. I'll paste the plan here which I have "photoshopped" most of my changes. Re: It's my turn to build. Building the Columbia with DFH 8Aug 01, 2010 9:37 pm Looks lovely Sashla! Whereabouts in North Vic are you, if you don't mind me asking? I'm originally from Bendigo and have friends right along the Murray. Hope that the build is a dream for you and your children! Building the Columbia with DFH 9Aug 01, 2010 10:09 pm Hi Sashla, Welcome to H1. I like your plan and the changes you have made. I like the idea of closing off your lounge and bedroom. Our boys always woke us up when they came in at all hours as our bedroom is just off the front door. Also good idea to do sliding doors on the smaller bedrooms. We have done the same in our new house to be. Kay A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. House looks great. They have worked hard for you. Re: It's my turn to build. Building the Columbia with DFH 13Apr 13, 2011 5:04 pm Hi Sashla! We are also building the Columbia and are in Bendigo. We are at a much earlier stage to you...We just had our soil tests! How has your build gone? Are you moved in yet? Would love to see some more pics! Also, i can't see your plans anymore. Not sure if you deleted it or something has gone wrong in cyber space! I'm really interested in seeing how your living room went with your glass doors. Does it give you much more space? So many questions lol Sorry! Dennis Family Homes Columbia 211 Deposit paid- 21/03/11 Re: It's my turn to build. Building the Columbia with DFH 14Apr 13, 2011 5:33 pm Hi Melissa (or Ben) I will repost the plan again and some photos later this evening. The house is almost complete now, it should be handed over to me in 2 or 3 weeks. In the end I changed my mind about the glass doors in the lounge. I've ended up just putting a door where the bulk-head between the family and hall way is. A friend of mine put a glass door in the lounge and closed off those openings in the lounge and although it gave her a lovely private space for her own retreat, to me it appeared that it made the house smaller........ I felt like when I walked in the front door that there was only the one kitchen/family living space. Someone else I know is building the same house (they're only at soil test stage too) and they're putting double doors into the living and tiling the walkway from the hall way to the main bedroom. Personally I think that would make the room appear way smaller but we're all different with different needs Cheers, Sally Re: It's my turn to build. Re: It's my turn to build. Building the Columbia with DFH 18Apr 27, 2011 8:33 am It's basically finished now. I'll be doing a "walk through" with the builder this week and it's being concreted next week. Then I can move in Re: It's my turn to build. Building the Columbia with DFH 20Jun 09, 2011 12:12 pm Yep! Been in the house 3 weeks now. I can't say that there's been any issues really. Just small things like they missed a door that I added but no worries in recitifying that. There's a couple of tiny things to be fixed eg. painting a couple of gullies on the roof (between the tiles) which were missed but they can get fixed up at the 6 month mark. I love the plan it suits my kids (2 teeangers) and I perfectly and I'm so glad that I put the door in between the hall and dining/kitchen area because otherwise we'd be able to hear both TVs. I can post more photos if you're interested. Now that I have a landline and broadband again it wont be so difficult! Thank you so much everyone. This all makes a lot of sense.
