I've never actually filled out a warranty card, yet I have had to make warranty claims in the past and the question has never even come up.
What matters is your proof of purchase - with date, and some form of proof (just in case) of the terms of the warranty (length, etc.).
Someone once actually advised me (a while ago) not to fill out/sign the warranty cards, as it then restricts you to ALL of the conditions on it, whereas by not filling it out you had more room for arguement....
Guys, i'm assuming that Tam means the warranty cards that they recieved for the items in their new place. eg. oven rangehood etc. If that is correct, then the builder should be able to give you more information as they would have bought the appliances prior to installation in the house.
Give them a call.
Hand-over date would be the go. A few months before moving in we bought a few of the appliances ourselves for our builder to install. We had a warrant y claim with our oven (Blanco) and Blanco said that the warranty was from the day we moved in (they were very good, by the way).
I've always understood warranty cards to be unnecessary and are just used by the manufacturer to get your details for their databases. As Rodda says, what matters is the proof of purchase. These are what matter legally.
