Browse Forums Building A New House Re: laura2009 - my build - tiling pics 81Jun 22, 2011 8:38 am Painting has started. First coat of external painting has been completed. The alfresco ceiling looks huge now that the eaves look like part of the undercover space. Painters were painting inside the garage when I last drove past. I spoke with them and they said 2 weeks to complete the work and that they are working on other jobs too. That brings us right up to pic date. I've decided to keep a camera on me now all the time in case I get a chance to take some pics. Hopefully I will get some today but the whether has been miserable and has put me off walking around in the mud and cold. Re: laura2009 - my build - tiling pics 82Jun 22, 2011 10:31 am Great news - don't blame you re the weather - it's been awful hasn't it? Re: laura2009 - my build - tiling pics 83Jun 28, 2011 8:37 am We had the two days of painting last week and then the painters were MIA until yesterday. At my visit last night I saw that they had started internal spray painting. The windows were taped up, all I could get was a sneak peak through a half open ensuite window. The shower screen was on and looked great and I was really happy with the wall colour (which is pretty hard to pick in advance I thought, without seeing how much light rooms get and seeing other choices on a large scale etc). We used (Fairmont) Wattyl Flokati. No downpipes on yet and the alfresco still needs to be concreted. PCI is supposed to be on Monday... Re: laura2009 - my build - tiling pics 84Jun 28, 2011 11:06 am Spoke to painter this morning. Only wet areas and garage have been painted. First spray to all walls is happening today. Here's the bad news - NO way will they be done for practical completion Monday. Painter said they need another two weeks because they have to go onto another job after today. So frustrating! When were we going to get advice from Fairmont? Re: laura2009 - my build 85Jun 28, 2011 11:18 am Bummer!! Why can't they just stay and finish your job?? For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: laura2009 - my build 86Jul 04, 2011 2:36 pm So today is our anticipated practical completion day and we have not heard from Fairmont until client liaison responded to my emails just now (only to say they don't know what is happening and will contact the SS). We can't get through to the SS on his mobile so we have been stuck in no mans land wondering when the blo*dy house will be completed. It's crap really. No trades at the house today either. Over the last two weeks the painters did two days work each week and that was it. Now I just hope the tiler and carpet layer we have lined up doesn't have another job now which will put ours back even further. We also have a furniture order at Harvey Norman, fortunately they will hold it until the end of the month. Building sucks Re: laura2009 - my build 87Jul 04, 2011 3:34 pm That's no good. Is your SS always so difficult to contact? I've found that I can get through to mine easy enough. I hope he's not avoiding your calls. Maybe try contacting the SS from a different number if you haven't already. Does the house look finished??? Re: laura2009 - my build 88Jul 05, 2011 9:09 am Yep, SS has alway been difficult to contact. The latest is that the painters will be finished at the end of next week. So that's a whole month it will have taken for them to paint our house. The SS didn't tell us this either, the client liaison guy called us with the news. Lets hope they have some sense pour the concrete for the alfresco and get the downpipes on in the meantime. Re: laura2009 - my build 89Jul 05, 2011 10:12 am Maybe you should take a week off work and organise the trades yourself?? Frustrating For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: laura2009 - my build 90Jul 07, 2011 12:29 am Mclaren Maybe you should take a week off work and organise the trades yourself?? Frustrating The ss didnt even realise fairmont were concreting the alfresco. Good thing we raised it with him! The tiler laid a strip of tiles on what was the slab that extends beyond the sliding doors that lead to backyard. When we said we didn't want them there he was trying to get out of ripping them up. Saying we could do it or to get our tiler to do it. Lazy. When the alfresco slab is poured we are tiling it,so we don't want a strip of other tile there that we didnt specify. We are really not happy because the delays costs us and it's getting tight this end of the build (vent). Last lot of activity at house was last tuesday! frustrating! To be fair I should mention as a good will gesture ss will clear excess soil in front yard, which is helpful. Small win I guess. Would rather have house finished on time. Re: laura2009 - my build 91Jul 07, 2011 10:43 am Hi Laura2009, I may have missed it in your forum somewhere, but just wondering why they didnt lay Alfresco Slab at beginning Slab pour? I'm building with Fairmont, and they did my Alfresco slab with the house slab. When we found out how cheap slab was, we couldnt say no, to having the Alfresco slabbed Re: laura2009 - my build 92Jul 07, 2011 12:03 pm 1stBuildFR Hi Laura2009, I may have missed it in your forum somewhere, but just wondering why they didnt lay Alfresco Slab at beginning Slab pour? I'm building with Fairmont, and they did my Alfresco slab with the house slab. When we found out how cheap slab was, we couldnt say no, to having the Alfresco slabbed I don't know why it wasn't poured at the same time? They sought of did concrete footings for it but I do remember it saying in the paperwork to be poured seperately. I assumed there was some sort of special reason for that. I was thinking last night that it should be secured to the existing slab somehow so it doesn't pull away over time. We had thought about a building a deck ourselves until we got the concrete qoute for the alfresco. Good price and seemed so much easier than adding another post-handover job to our growing list. Re: laura2009 - my build - ugly downpipes 94Jul 09, 2011 8:25 pm oh dear If they get painted in a dark colour like your bricks, it will improve the look a great deal. Perhaps talk to your builder about whether there is any alternative to the downpipe placement. Re: laura2009 - my build 95Jul 09, 2011 9:04 pm I see what you mean. I would look at painting them. Our builder paints ours whatever colour we want. Re: laura2009 - my build - ugly downpipes 96Jul 09, 2011 9:20 pm That's ridiculous! The downpipe positions have been a pain for us as well. It's not only our homes either that have them in stupid positions. I went past a home getting built by our builder today and DH and I couldn't help but laugh. They had a verandah entrance out front with a single post in the middle and sure enough, there's the downpipe on that post. You just don't want downpipes at your entrance when you go in! I would suggest painting them a darker colour to blend in with the paint or moving them after handover. Unfortunately, our builder doesn't want to know about them. Re: laura2009 - my build - ugly downpipes 97Jul 12, 2011 10:18 am I got in to take some paint pics yesterday. The hall and bedrooms are completed and they were painting the doors when I arrived. Living area still only first coat. It looked like a really tidy job and the painters were friendly and let me know what they were doing. The trades on site have been a million times better at customer service than SS has been. (Fairmont) Wattyl Flokati to walls with white ceiling & trims. Will they paint them so they don't stick out like a sore thumb? Re: laura2009 - my build - paint pics 99Jul 12, 2011 11:05 am Hi Lara, hope the painting goes smoothly for you.Regarding down pipes, the house you built was there a display home if yes were pipes in same position. If there as a display and pipes were placed somewere else you could have an argument for them to be moved Re: laura2009 - my build - paint pics 100Jul 12, 2011 1:01 pm Being first time builders we didn't even think about where downpipes would be and it was never raised with us during the design process. It's a modified version of a plan too so the facade is not the same. If the checkout girls at the supermarket can ask me where I want my meat packed and let me know where they have placed the eggs, I think the same service should be given to me as a client when building!
