Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 19, 2010 6:18 pm I am hoping someone might be able to help. We are building a new home and took a custom design to our builder. On our original plans we had an outdoor area termed "pergola". The structure was to be under the main roof, but timber decking on bearers and joists. The builders draftsman had to alter our plans to reduce the frontage only, but also changed the outdoor area to an "Alfresco" area. We had a quote from the builder back in November using our original plans and it was quoted as a "deck", but after much tooing and froing with their draftsman not being able to make a simple alteration and doing his own thing, the plans finally came back with an "alfresco" area and our builder told us that it was quoted as part of the house and would therefore cost more. In your experience, is a deck and alfresco area different, and what exactly is the difference? Re: Alfresco vs Pergola 2Jul 19, 2010 6:31 pm This is my understanding of it: An alfresco is when the ceiling is part of the main house roof line - as oppossed to verandahs, pergolas etc which have their own roofs - be they timber, colourbond or whatever. Decking purely refers to the flooring - a pergola or alfresco could have a decking floor or a concrete floor or a paved floor. As to the relative merits of both, there are many many threads on that topic. Is there a building permit? RU in Victoria?
