Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 25, 2007 7:40 pm Hi everyone.
I am looking at building a new house onn my block, which runs from north to south, with the front of the house being on the north side. Basically either the bedrooms will be on the west side or and the living area/kitchen etc will be on the east side..OR vica versa. As the hottest part of the house wld be the west side, wld u rather have the bedrooms there or the living area? There are advantages and disadvantages for both, but I thought I wld just ask yr opinion without going through them..... Any thoughts? Thanks. Re: East v West - Where to put the bedrooms? 2Oct 25, 2007 7:56 pm I have both……2 of my bedrooms get morning sun only.
So for the best part of the day they are fine. Unfortunately, one is a home office and the other gets very little use. Our bedroom gets ALL the afternoon sun….very hot! So does our ONLY lounge room. But Aircon took care of that this year. It’s important to have good window dressings on all the windows that get the full sun. We need to be smarter in the act of conserving heat or detracting it. Plan your layout to how you think it suits you/family best, but remember smart thinking for window dressings and extra ventilation. Good luck with the decision. ![]() Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: East v West - Where to put the bedrooms? 3Oct 25, 2007 7:58 pm Hi Kanates--
You can find some principles here: http://www.greenhouse.gov.au/yourhome/t ... l/fs13.htm The general idea is to have smaller windows on the west side of the house to minimise the heat gain from the summer sun. If you ask me, I'd rather have the smaller windows in the bedrooms than in the living areas, so that's what we went with--bedrooms to the west. But as Michelle said, you'll have to look at what works best for you. Just be aware that large windows on the west side of your house will (probably) mean a bigger cooling bill in summer or more uncomfortable conditions. --Mike PS: also forgot to add that it depends on your climate and location. If you're in Tasmania or on the south slope of a hill, the answer might be different to if you're in Broken Hill on the north slope of a hill. Everything I know, I learned from SBS. I asked the same question re bedrooms on the hot west side and this is the thread where I got some good advice http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=3305&highlight= (We have now decided to go with our own design, but the bedrooms are still all running along the west side) Good luck with it all - post a pic of the floorplan if you have one, as you can see everyone is most helpful!! Re: East v West - Where to put the bedrooms? 5Oct 25, 2007 9:06 pm Bedrooms are better on the east side than on the west side. You get the morning sun which is a great way to wake up. A hot clime or just hot summers? Re E or W - I've had the lot - in all climes and personally - I like the east for bedrooms - and the west for living cooking etc, and lots of shade on the west to ensure summer sun does not penetrate into the house. My current place has an east and west bedroom upstairs, and in summer it gets a tad warm going to bed, especially with daylight saving. I also like the kitchen and such areas to be on the north east to catch the morning sun in winter for breaky. It's good for the soul to look out at the sun on a winter morn. Steve Re: East v West - Where to put the bedrooms? 7Oct 25, 2007 9:33 pm But what happen if both side your neighbors are two stores houses? and you house sit on North / South or South / North. Re: East v West - Where to put the bedrooms? 8Oct 25, 2007 10:04 pm here at the unit that we're renting, all bedrooms are facing west. it's hard for my children to sleep during the day, as it gets very very hot during summer.
i would prefer to have all bedrooms in the east. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! I will attach the floor plan tomorrow as I dont have the current one here at home at the moment.
I have spoken to architects, and builders, and they all have differing opinions. One thing that the builder we are going through did mention is that council may not allow the living area to be on the east side because it may not meet energy efficiency ratings this way. Either way, one side of the house is going to get hot in summer, and generally speaking most people who have built before have stated that the area which has less windows should be on the west side. I know that there is nothing worse than sleeping in hot weather, but I guess we will have ducted airconditioning so we could put that on for 10-15 min before bed time to cool the rooms down. I should mention that there will be an alfresco room attached on the same side as the living area, with only two walls, so in summer if it is on the west side this area will get hot I guess. My other concern is that the living area, kitchen and dining area would need more airconditioning for longer periods of the day in summer to keep it cool, and the sun may be blinding during the day/early evening in summer in the living areas. I guess proper blinds etc would be required. I must admit I am leaning towards the bedrooms being on the West side.... Re: East v West - Where to put the bedrooms? 10Oct 26, 2007 9:26 am Bedrooms to the East. Once they're hot you'll never be able to sleep in them. And you can use blinds etc on the west facing living area. Plus in winter, you'll still get a lot of natural light in your living area. One way we're dealing with that issue is by having a large cutout in the bulkhead between the bedroom hallway and the living areas, allowing light from the west to come through to the living areas on the east side. You can see an example here, albeit with a wooden contraption inserted: http://www.metricon.com.au/victoria/hom ... fault.aspx Go to picture #8. We'll probably put plantation shutters in ours. --Mike Everything I know, I learned from SBS. Just make sure you've got some very good natural airflow - or you and and your family will dread summer. Adelaide is better suited to Mediterranean living - sleep in the east - live in west. And in summer that means - Enjoy the winter warmth outdoors - and summer is just a bonus. ![]() We live in a great country - learn to enjoy it. Steve Re: East v West - Where to put the bedrooms? 13Oct 27, 2007 12:13 am Hi Kanates, me again. As I said we have decided to put our bedrooms on the west side.....a few people with valid points have tried to talk us out of it, we listened but are still going with what we want - one of the major points was that in melbourne it is really only very hot (35+) for a few days of the year whereas having warmth and light in the living areas is pretty important throughout the whole year...never lived in Adelaide so not sure about climate there...
All in all - its really up to you and your preferences for lifestyle and comfort...personally I can handle the heat very well and prefer hot weather whereas I dread the cold and suffer from "winter blues"! At our rental we have a wall mounted air con unit that maybe gets turned on 10 - 15 days out of 365! On really hot days, we keep the blinds closed in the bedrooms through the day, open the windows at night and sleep with very little (if anything ![]() Ruth -Bought house in Melbourne inner burbs, knocked it down & now...we are owner builders! Kanates I suggest that before you build - review the closest station readings to your home site from here and see what the "typical" weather patterns are. Then add in - lifestyle - with the prevaling breeze temperatures etc - and then choose the orientation and location of your house and bedrooms to suit the climate. And as Ruth says - wear less if it's hot or just throw another doona on when it's not ![]() Steve http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/ca_vic_names.shtml Re: East v West - Where to put the bedrooms? 16Oct 27, 2007 10:42 pm ![]() As the hottest part of the house wld be the west side, wld u rather have the bedrooms there or the living area? There are advantages and disadvantages for both, but I thought I wld just ask yr opinion without going through them..... I have two of our bedrooms facing west. We've only been in the house for two months so not yet sure how the Melbourne summer will affect those rooms. But if I was going to buiild again I wouldn't have any rooms facing west. At least no windows facing west. That's also because I'm not a fan of very hot weather. Having said that, if our first summer in the house proves that these western rooms are going to get really hot them I'm looking at installing these (tropical louvres) on the outside: Not sure how good they are. Haven't fully done the research but it could be an option? Or I think you can calculate the angle of the sun during summer and possibly make like a mini patio roofing type of shading that will help block the sun? Sorry if it doesn't make sense as I'm not sure what it's called. Hehe [sneakersss] Re: East v West - Where to put the bedrooms? 17Oct 28, 2007 11:14 am YSSIM - that will help - but the key thing with hot western sun is the thermal mass build up that then acts as a heat pump warming the air around the house (and intothe rooms) long after the sun has gone down in summer.
You ideally want to shade the entire side of the house that faces west, to really stop it heating up. In my place I currently acheive that with a 7 metre wide low verandah downstairs that stops the sun hiting the house for all but 30 or 40 minutes in the late afternoon as the sun dips over the ocean. Upstairs (lots of large windows facing west for the views) I'm designing some external shutters that will stand away from the house to stop the sun hitting the house but still allow air to flow behind it to stop pumping heat into the room upstairs in summer, and in winter i'll move tham as I want the reverse to happen. Ruth - I'd still go with bedrooms to the east, living areas to the north and of course, an eco friendly design. ![]() Steve Re: East v West - Where to put the bedrooms? 18Oct 28, 2007 11:50 am I have to agree that shading would be the best option. We are going to have the main bedroom facing west, and because of the angle of the house, the bedroom will somewhat shade the dining room, and family rooms. The minor bedrooms will be on the east side of the house.
We plan on having some sort of screen to stop being able to see into our ensuite - whether it be trees or a wall, etc. Because of the location it would be hard to have a patio or similar in that part of the garden (at the very front to the side) as the kitchen, meals, family is to the rear of that. My bedroom in my parent's place had a wall that faced west with no windows and the killer was in summer when it was sunny as the bricks would get that hot (like cook an egg on them hot) and they would retain the heat well into the night - an you could feel the heat from them on the inside (despite insulation). I think I'd rather windows to all bricks - at least the glass cools down - bricks hold the heat. Ray.
