Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 25, 2007 10:16 am I could resort to posing a comment a'la Michelle like 'anybody with wood please respond' ... however i'm too mature for that ......
ANYWAY .. my question ... I went to price out merbau for our deck yesterday and the guy at the wood place said 'we don't stock merbau, we stock a wood called Billion' (note, it's not called Billion because I googled it and couldn't find it but that's how the word sounds). apparently, it is a class 1 hardwood (similar to Jarrah) and has the same colourings as merbau. Anybody know anything about it or what the name of it actually is?? Re: Decking wood 3Oct 25, 2007 5:44 pm Please please PLEASE think about where this timber comes from before buying your decking material.
Merbau/Belian = south east Asian rainforest species. Not only is the timber harvested unsustainably (often permanent clearing of the forest - land use change), but it also has to travel a long way to get to your local Bunnings. Two extra-large doses of carbon released into the atmosphere. IMHO we shouldn't be allowed to import or sell this stuff in Australia. I'm sure the orangutans of the world would agree! Buy yourself some decent Eucalypt or Callitris decking. It only costs a little more and you are doing the environment a really big favour. And unfortunately the people harvesting it get diddly squat (for those not in the know that's next to nothing) of what the large - Conglomerates (usually OS owned) are getting. Rape and Pillage. Be it of people or natural resources in another country - does not mean it's OK. Slave trading used to be polular once too !!!! I agree Lyn, go for a sustainable - local, low manufacturing impact timber to meet your needs. Steve Re: Decking wood 8Oct 26, 2007 8:18 am Jatoba is from Amazon rainforests. Available from major retailers.
Disgraceful. So we here in Oz, its all about protect our country etc...but hey...its okay to destroy the world's largest rainforest as its in another country. Decking should be outlawed above a certain % of house size. Re: Decking wood 9Oct 26, 2007 9:22 am BAH!!
They are only trees... They are not that important to us.... What do they do for us? A tree has never offered to cook me dinner, wash my car or mop the floor. I say cut 'em all down and deck the whole world! Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 10970 We are tossing up between a Jarrahdale radiant wood fire (the Pioneer) and a convection wood fire (Innovator or Countryman) but cannot decide on which type of wood fire is… 0 5247 yeah i couldnt picture it issue either, but i could clearly picture what they were doing wrong haha 2 5289 |
