Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 30, 2010 12:08 pm Hi everyone I am currently going through our third draft of our house, and really want double doors to our robes in the minor bedrooms. Our builder has just told me that one of the doors has to be fixed with a bolt. This means that one door (the free door) is easily operated by the door handle, but if you want to open the other door (the fixed door), you have to operate the slide bolts, either top or bottom or both, to have both doors open. This may be an inconvenience, but there is really no other way to operate double doors. Not really sure about this idea and would like to see how everyone else that has double doors are held shut and open. The reason I had chosen double doors was so you could have access to the whole robe at once, versus the sliding doors which you can only access one side. Photos please and anything else that can help me. Or maybe this is how everyone elses is and I am just not seeing it. Thankyou for your help Re: Double Wardrobe doors How do yours close/held closed???? 2Jun 30, 2010 12:30 pm This was the very reason I chose double opening doors instead of sliders, so that the full expanse of the wardrobe can be seen at the one time. Ours all have fixed handles that are pulled rather than turned to open them, and the doors are both secured by a pin and plastic clasp in the top of the door frame. I have several sets of double doors to rooms which have a fixed door with a bolt and the other the openable handle, but all the double wardrobes/cupboards have the other method. I'll take some pics in a minute...just having lunch! EDIT: ADDED PICS! Re: Double Wardrobe doors How do yours close/held closed???? 3Jun 30, 2010 1:17 pm ahhh Stormy you are my hero!!!! Thank you so so much. Your wardrobes are EXACTLY what I am after. And now with these 'step by step' photos I am sure I shall get them!!! There will be no way this can not be done. YAY!!!! MMMM really excited now, Thankyou once again. Re: Double Wardrobe doors How do yours close/held closed???? 4Jun 30, 2010 1:30 pm I would also think that those pin-clasp things are a whole lot cheaper than a working door handle + slide bolts! Re: Double Wardrobe doors How do yours close/held closed???? 5Jun 30, 2010 2:36 pm You can also get magnet panels that fix to the cupboard frame, and have a steel plate on the door, so the magnetic force holds the door shut. Our builder has just told me that one of the doors has to be fixed with a bolt. What a peculiar thing for a builder to say. What Stormy showed is how all double hinged wardrobe doors are normally done, and have been for at least the past 25 years. Our single robe and broom cupboard doors in our old place had exactly the same arrangement too; I'm sure because it was the cheaper option. That builder didn't spend a cent more than he had to.... Re: Double Wardrobe doors How do yours close/held closed???? 7Jul 01, 2010 10:26 am Double entry doors to a room are usually done in the method described in your top post, or even 1.5 doors. I agree with the above posts that both doors should be caught on spring catches. Some people don't have time to do the job right the first time, but seem to have plenty of time to fix their mistakes.
