Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 26, 2010 12:52 am Hi all, I have been thinking alot on the external colour scheme I have picked and could I please ask for some opinions please? The more I think about the colours, I more I feel inconfident Roof, fascias and gutter:: Dune Bricks: Austral Urban choc with standard grey rolled mortar Garage: Surfmist (should I get Dune instead but if Surfmist is ok too?) Window frame: White Front door: Surfmist (does it look odd since it is so bright, should I get timber looking door instead) Porch/Pillars: rendered Camel Train I am getting very worried about it and would like to know what you guys think. Thanks alot Lost_sheep Re: Lost in the exterior colour scheme 2Jun 26, 2010 9:46 am I would probably stick with either dune or surfmist. That would give you a total of 4 colours. Timber would go well with that brick and render colour I feel. Would also help if you post your elevations. Austral Chocolate... (think it looks lighter than this though) Camel train Re: Lost in the exterior colour scheme 4Jun 26, 2010 10:32 am Fernyhouse I'd probably make the fascia surfmist as well. Just to break up all Dune look on the roof, drive around and you will notice most houses have fascia a different colour to the guttering Actually, most of the houses around here have the same colours...I'd guess only about 20-30% of houses have gone for different spouting and fascia. Different colours definitely can look good, but if you pick the wrong ones it can make the spouting look skinny and weird. If you're not confident about choices, sticking to less colours is probably a good idea. Re: Lost in the exterior colour scheme 5Jun 26, 2010 10:47 am Thank you very much for replying my enquires! I did read the conversations about colour combination from this forum but since the houses are normally having front rendering, I am not sure if the Dune roof will go well with bricks at the front of my house. Thanks Fernyhouse, I am actually thinking of having surfmist for fascia than Dune too! How about my garage though? Should I change it to Dune??? Yeh I will try to post the image of my frontage! My builder suggested to me that I should not use too many colours at the front as my house is narrow (8m width for the frontage). At first I picked Woodland grey for my roof but got told I should pick a lighter colour like surfmist but I personally think surfmist is too bright then I started to consider Dune. On the colour card is look much darker than surfmist! However from some pics I found from the internet Dune is actually very bright too and sometimes it looks like dirty grey ?!?!?!!! From you guys point of view, does Dune and surfmist look very similar in real?!?! Re: Lost in the exterior colour scheme 6Jun 26, 2010 10:55 am Thanks for your opinion kek, I will think harder if I should put my fascia with different colour Re: Lost in the exterior colour scheme 7Jun 26, 2010 10:58 am Hmm... I cant seem to upload the image of my frontage here. it says "sorry the board attachment quota has been reached". Is there another way to upload pic??? Re: Lost in the exterior colour scheme 8Jun 26, 2010 10:58 am If you have white window frames and Surfmist door I would keep the Surfmist garage. Dune is a great colour and on the roof it will look lighter, surfmist for a roof would be too glarey I would imagine. We have timber doors with surfmist garage, surfmist facia and dune gutters, and surfmist roof but we have a flat roof and you can't see it. Re: Lost in the exterior colour scheme 9Jun 26, 2010 12:12 pm Hi Lost-sheep, if you wanna get an idea of how your colour combinations will look - try out this link http://www.studiom.com.au/envisage If you wanna add images to the thread, you will need to upload them on a photo hosting website such as flickr and then link to them from the thread. If it were my house, I'd probably go with Dune gutters & surfmist fascias, with the downpipes in a colour as closely matched to the bricks/render as possible. As for the garage door, do you want it to compete with the render colour of your columns? Or would you prefer it to blend into the bricks more? If not go with the Dune. Unfortunately I only realised it now and the roof is being ordered by my builder and it is not possible to change to the other colour. I am now at the moment trying to think how I could fix the mistakes I made by changing the colour of other things to make my house less ugly At the same time I am trying to see if I can have a better idea on this Dune colour by locating a house with a Dune roof. Perhaps it is not as bright as I thought?!?!?! If anyone knows there a house in Adelaide has a Dune roof, I will be soo sooo pleased if you could let me know I am having my downpipes in a colour as close as to my bricks. For the garage door it will blend in better with the bricks with Dune, is that what you mean?!?! Ok now I am trying to see if I can upload the frontage of my house in the websites you suggested. Thanks very much, Rosemi! Re: Lost in the exterior colour scheme 11Jun 26, 2010 3:33 pm Here we go - hope the image turn out ok. Thank you! Have a look at this link - there is a small photo of a house with a dune roof about halfway down the page. As your garage is practically right next to the portico, I'd go for a colour that doesn't overpower the portico render colour, hence why I said Dune. I think a surfmist garage door would be too much. Have you considered a timberlook garage door, in a colour such as caoba? Should I not use surfmist too??? Yeh I actually do consider to change the colour of my garage and my front door as well..... so how about dune garage but timber looking front door??? what do you think? Thanks alot! Lost_sheep Re: Lost in the exterior colour scheme 14Jun 26, 2010 9:07 pm natural timber looks great with any colour scheme , or you could go with a surfmist coloured front door - it'll match in well with your window frames Building SOR with Dreamstart Homes Customised Dream Dior/Summer Sensation https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=83776 Re: Lost in the exterior colour scheme 15Jun 26, 2010 9:11 pm My suggestion would be: Roof, Garage, Front Door, Gutters - DUNE As your windows are white - I would chose the SURFMIST for your Fascia - to match the windows so they are tied in to the whole facade rather than being the only white Then you will have your brick colour Then Render colour I think that will balance out nicely using minimal colours but enough to make it interesting. Re: Lost in the exterior colour scheme 17Jun 26, 2010 9:40 pm Good luck with your choices, lost_sheep. To throw a spanner in the works so to speak, we chose one single colour for all the metalwork - gutters, fascia, downpipes, window frames, garage door, and the timber front door too. To us it was the simplest solution and tied everything together. It does not look odd to have downpipes a different colour to the bricks in my opinion; if you try to closely match the downpipe colour with your bricks it will probably lead to a clash of colours elsewhere. Our metalwork colour is vastly different to what you are thinking of though. It is Colorbond 'Deep Ocean' (also called Mountain Blue). Bricks are Austral 'Latrobe' which feature a blue flash through some of them, which matches the Deep Ocean. Tiles are Bristile 'Magnum.' I forget the colour of the Colorbond fences either side of the house, but we chose it to match the render, and the fence panel frames are Deep Ocean too. Here's a pic which shows how well it all matched up. There is no downpipe in this pic but you can easily imagine how it would go against the bricks by how the vertical sections of the window frames look: Geoff - Decophile. Yeh I was far too stressed at my final appointment with my builder as they kept delivering bad news to me... sigh.... that partly explained why I lost my confident at that time to choose Dune over woodland grey for my roof... Anyway now this is too late to change the roof colour but I hope that I am still in time to change the colour for my garage and other structures for my front. I think I am pretty much set on changing my fascia colour to surfmist; Garage door to Dune; but still tossing about having timber like or surfmist for my front door?????? Is it a good idea? I am thinking if in the end my house turns out very ugly I will do rendering to fix it up. I am thinking it may be easier to find a rendering colour to go with Dune garage door than a surfmist garage? Re: Lost in the exterior colour scheme 19Jun 26, 2010 10:39 pm Just another thought... if I do use Dune for garage, front door and roof. Should I actually pick a lighter colour for my porch? Could I please ask what colour your porch is, Eager? Hey lost_sheep, I would like to comment that your choice of Austral Chocolate bricks with grey mortar and white windows would look great with a Surfmist Garage door. The range of render colours would be endless with white windows and Surfmist garage door. Cheers Jazzie9 That sucks! Hope it all works out.
