Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 25, 2010 4:35 pm Hi, Its my first home and I just had a handover for my new home. Which should be pretty exciting but something just happened which spoiled everything. My build has been going relatively fine compared to what I have been reading here. And I just had handover and there were a couple of things that needed to be dealt with but not critical. I already had really low expectations..... During Practical Handover, I was told that Alinta had lost our paper work and there would be a delay in gas connection. When we had handover, The BS told us that he was on to it and is pushing them hard to get it connected and we should be connected within a week. Low and Behold...we rang up Alinta and they claimed that they only received the paper work the day before our handover...and we would have to wait 3 weeks for connection...and our lease ends in 3 weeks... Alinta said if we can produce proof that we have applied earlier they can rush it in for us. We have contacted our builder who in turn is contacting the plumbers who is supposed to be arranging this....So now we are stuck....we will have to go back to our agent to extend our lease but I feel I shouldn't be the one paying for this oversight....anyone had a similar situation and what was the resolution? Or do I have to kop this on the chin... To be continued......... Re: Is Handover with no gas for 3 weeks considered a handove 2Jun 25, 2010 4:57 pm We moved into our house without gas for 4wks - but we only had ourselves to blame since we completed the home after sacking the builder LOL. We didn't realise we had to arrange connection until we were wanting to move in - SURPRISE there is up to a 6-8wk wait time. Well lucky for us it was the middle of summer and we only had gas for hot water. So I feel for you - here is hoping they can get yours connected quickly. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Is Handover with no gas for 3 weeks considered a handove 3Jun 25, 2010 5:20 pm Yes I rmemeber we had a short delay with getting gas connected - we had HWS and cook top on gas. From memory it was about a week after we moved in - wasnt builders fault, we were told about arrangeing connection but had issues with the gas company - said they would turn up but person A didnt tell person B, then forget to tell us we had to be home for it, then went to wrong address etc etc Fortunately for us, we still owned our old house, settlement on that was a couple of weeks after we moved in here, only 1 km away - of course house was empty and all our things moved here but elecctricity still connnected - I used to drive over there in my dressing gown to have a shower Re: Is Handover with no gas for 3 weeks considered a handove 4Jun 25, 2010 5:27 pm Helyn - DH and I were showering with cold water whilst I would boil the jug 10 times for the kidlets and fill the laundry sink LOL. We did have plenty of other options - both sets of parents don't live too far away, we have a council swimming pool across the road but thankfully it was 40 degrees and I was 8mths preg so a cold shower was actually quite lovely. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Is Handover with no gas for 3 weeks considered a handove 5Jun 25, 2010 5:34 pm Kyton, fortunately we never got to the cold showering stage It was in october but cold showers still too spartan for me - had the back up option of DS's unit, he only lives 3 km away - the other problem was food - only so many meals one can microwave, and so many times one wants KFC (like once ) wasnt practical to take everything to cook at old house. Re: Is Handover with no gas for 3 weeks considered a handove 6Jun 29, 2010 5:47 pm Thanks for the replies.....nice to know I'm not the only one with such encounters.....The construction manager has come back to say that they will arrange for an independent contractor to come in and connect the gas for us...so we will be keeping our fingers crossed it gets done.... The fastest thing a builder will do is bank your cheque, those systems work perfectly with lightning speed, everything else is slow burn. Just the way it is. 1 8711 Can someone please offer some advice? Im DESPERATE. Because I'm completely and utterly exhausted. How long are variations taking with other companies at the moment?
