Hmm snow to the base of the mountains you say? damn! if only i wasn't building a house at the moment - otherwise I'd probably be in NZ skiing on some of that snow. Your photos have given me another dose of wanderlust and itchy feet. One of these days I will have to get over to NZ for a holiday. Love the plan. It is intelligent in its layout and simple in its outline. Never understood making the outside have lots of corners and sticky outy bits. Might look good but very expensive. Also like the simple roofline. Only suggestion I would have Somewoman already mentioned, which was tall narrow windows on north facing windows in lounge and dining. Also, have you thought of putting in a fireplace? Be lovely to look out those views in the glow of a warm cosy fire in winter. My sister lives outside of Auckland and it gets a bit chilly. Can only imagine it is colder where you are! Building tip No. 3: A raft slab will not get you down a river. A waffle pod slab does not go with maple syrup. Can only imagine it is colder where you are! umm, we are higher than Auckland...so warmer. (I even put a map on my thread! remind me not to travel in a car with you navigating in Europe...) hee hee yes, have tried to squeeze a fire in somewhere...as I LOVE them, but the only thing I can think of is an ethanol one (just a small one) that can be put away ( up the loft ladder in garage) for 10 mths of the year and made space for, in the 2mths, we might want it. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ ethanol ones can be moved around as you dont need a flue/ chimney Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ they cost a bit, but I am happy to pay more for a moveable one, as the house isnt that big to house one 12mths of the year I have a 600mm x 2100 window going in on that north wall...whaoao! I was originally having a verandah infront of master bed and the roof line going straight (no valley like there is now) so a window would have been fruitless, as no sun and also no privacy for the master verandah, but too dear, so brought the roof line in and YES a window there will be a wonderful idea and we get all the hot winter sun in but not enough to pull the curtains to stop the couches fading etc (which is what we do now with our north facing windows...drives me nuts.) its either that or we drape old duvet covers over the leather couches, looks so pikey... so yes, a window and a fire... good call Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Plans and photos of our land in NZ (I know, gate crashin 60Jul 08, 2010 8:02 am Hey Kiwi-you are just as gorgeous as your children (and the sheep aint bad either!)
