Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 21, 2010 11:01 pm I just started building a house with blueprint homes and the footing went down today and am being told the slab is going down tomorrow. On looking over the drain layout the laundry floor drain looks to be in the wrong location, being under where the washing machine will go, rather than someware in the middle of the room. I'm worried this is going to cause issues when I'm cleaning since i would have to move the washing machine to get to the drain. and also cause rust issues with the washing machine. I've attached a picture of the area. The drain to the left is for the sink. The drain to the right is the floor drain. The washing machine will be positioned in the corner of the room at the bottom right. the drain is roughly 500 mm from the inner edge of the footing. In my current house the drain is about 800 mm from the wall and it is only just past the washing machine. Is this layout normal or should it be slightly further from the wall? A laundry floor drain is really only there in case of a flood from an appliance (like the washer) or a broken pipe. It does nothing all the rest of the time. I don't think you need to access it on a regular basis, and under the machine it will not be an eyesore. It will not cause any rust problem. If you find the floor tiles cause the machine to rock unevenly, due to a fall to the drain, the machine should have adjustable feet to cope with that. If you are concerned about the drain getting blocked by dust, just sweep a duster on a long handle under there once a month. Cheers Re: Help with laundary drain possibly in wrong location 3Jun 22, 2010 10:50 am I would have an issue with it. My washing machine sits on a box (which has draws in it) and this would completely cover the drain. Something you may need to consider if you ever choose to invest in something to put your washing machine on. Re: Help with laundary drain possibly in wrong location 4Jun 22, 2010 10:40 pm I've let the builder know about the issue, and they are telling me that they will look at fixing it. the slab went down today and I also noticed they were still missing a conduit for the a feature wall when I stopped by when they were laying it. Spoke to the builder immediately to let them know about the issue, they put one in, but one thats too small for getting the electricity and antenna point in it. The contract specifically states a larger conduit should have been used, so gotta contact them again tomorrow. Re: Help with laundary drain possibly in wrong location 5Jun 30, 2010 11:23 pm Just as an update. Looks like the laundry drains gunna be that way. spoke to a couple people who have the drain under the washing machine and they say its ok. guess its just something to check with the builder if it bothers you when the plans are being done up since the drain positions arn't shown on any of the plans. Conduit got sorted, they are going to put in a second conduit to the wall to put the antenna down, which will probably be better than the initial plan anyway since it means the power and antenna are well away from each other. all up really excited about the rest of the build process and theres always bound to be little issues you didn't expect. Still really happy with the builder choice, as they have been really accommodating to my requirements and helpful with getting everything within budget and having an awesome home at the end of it.
