Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 21, 2010 1:21 am We'r looking at building the Riverton 30 with Carlisle Homes. I see on this website there are a few others also building the Riverton and I'm just wondering what upgrades did you choose? Or did you make other changes, like to the floorplan? We'r looking at changing the Laundry so that it is larger (by moving the wardrobe to Bedroom 3 over to the Activty wall) and maybe put in overhead cupboards as well as get the larger cabinet/sink (in the laundry). Has anyone else done something similar? Or have you made any other changes that you found useful and wouldn't mind sharing? We're thinking of putting in tiles down the hallway, some extra powerpoints and TV points, a downlight and powerpoint to the plaster niche in the entry, a shower niche in the ensuite, an outdoor powerpoint to the alfresco, the larger entertainer stacker door to Alfresco, a sliding door to the hallway near the Activity room, remote control to the garage, and downlights throughout the main living areas. Does anyone else have some good ideas that I may be overlooking? Would appreciate your input and ideas. Re: WHAT UPGRADES/CHANGES SHOULD I DO WITH THE RIVERTON 30? 4Jun 26, 2010 2:02 am Helyn Perhaps you could post a floor plan of the house, then those who are not familiar with this design can also input. I wish I knew how! the last time I tried to upload a picture it didn't work. I'm hopeless! Re: WHAT UPGRADES/CHANGES SHOULD I DO WITH THE RIVERTON 30? 5Jun 26, 2010 2:51 am here is the base plan: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I'd move the robe as you mentioned, but i'd also steal a little more space from the activity room to add a linen/storage cupboard on the opposite wall. More storage is ALWAYS a good thing =) I'd also rearrange the ensuite to make a bigger shower, and the entry to the ensuite feels like wasted space. Changes below Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ is the void near the toilet and linen pegged for use? ie, air intake for heater or something? If not I'd steal that space for a vanity basin in the toilet. If it IS an air intake, perhaps you could move it to the hallway where the laundry is - you have lots of storage space in there now and probably wouldn't miss the little bit that would be required for the air intake. Personally, I'd also change the sliding door in the laundry to a hinged one. It's so hard to get in to clean the door around the washing machine, and it is just wasted space making sure that you have enough space there to get in to clean the door (tracks and glass). A hinged door with glass in it will still let in light without being a pain to clean. I don't understand the glass sliding door fascination with laundries - the machine blocks the little bit of extra light that you might be getting anyways, and it's not an attractive view from the outside looking in to the side of a washing machine Re: WHAT UPGRADES/CHANGES SHOULD I DO WITH THE RIVERTON 30? 6Jun 26, 2010 11:50 am Quote: I don't understand the glass sliding door fascination with laundries - the machine blocks the little bit of extra light that you might be getting anyways, and it's not an attractive view from the outside looking in to the side of a washing machine Oh I so agree - in the minority here though, most builders here seem to have taken on the sliding door in the laundry style, ours doesnt have it as standard but suggested we could change it - no way, Hose - I'll just pay little bit extra to have a half glass hinged door and the small window over the trough which can be opened - that is more than enough light and ventilation for a small room like a laundry IMO. Sorry, I digress I do feel the activity room is perhaps made a bit small and awkward by haveing that robe pushing into it - not sure I'd do that change myself. I was wondering about that myself... I would be interested in the dimensions of that room. I think the awkward comes from the wall not being straight, but that could be countered with adding a cupboard to the activity room side - and more storage is ALWAYS good. It just really depends on if the room is still big enough to be used for what the OP intends to use it for. There is always the option to slightly extend the house to gain a little more length through that room (and probably the family room - possibly also lengthen the kitchen) if more space is needed. I don't think it would be a massive expense to do so. Re: WHAT UPGRADES/CHANGES SHOULD I DO WITH THE RIVERTON 30? 8Jun 26, 2010 9:46 pm Alternatively you could then add a kind of built in desk are in the activities room to make it look like a niche wall/study nook - that's if you weren't after more storage - but lets face it - there is never too much storage I love what Somewoman has done with the ensuite too - I think this is a much better use of space Sleven Moved into our Atlantique MkII 36 by Carlisle Homes Re: WHAT UPGRADES/CHANGES SHOULD I DO WITH THE RIVERTON 30? 9Jul 03, 2010 5:49 pm [quote="sleven"]Alternatively you could then add a kind of built in desk are in the activities room to make it look like a niche wall/study nook - that's if you weren't after more storage - but lets face it - there is never too much storage Hi Sleven, That's exactly what we plan to do. We have relocated the wardrobe to Bedroom 3 over to the Activity wall, however we have put it closest to the hallway side instead of closest to the Activity window side (if that makes sense) and then the niche will be where we fit a desk/computer setup. At least that way we can hide away the mess that accumulates on the desk a little but still see what the kids are doing on the computer! The rest of that room really isn't for very much - mainly just to put the little ones' masses of toys and toy trolleys and prams and rocking horses and rocking sheep and keyboards, etc etc etc! If there's enough room we'll probably put a little children's wooden table and chairs set for them to draw etc. And throw in a bean bag or two and that'll be it. The idea is to TRY and keep most of the toys in that one space instead of spread throughout the entire house! I know... I have high hopes! We have 2 year old twins and a 3 year old, so there are PLENTY of toys at the moment. Hopefully when we move I can discard of the ones they barely touch and hopefully they won't notice! He he he! Although everytime I have tried to do that in the past, the day I'm going to throw out what never gets played with is suddenly the day they start playing with it again! And then I don't have the heart to take it from them as they're still finding joy out of playing with it! Anyway, back to the subject (I do tend to ramble!)... I like the idea re the master bedroom and ensuite but the standard layout actually suits us perfectly. I agree that there is wasted space in there, but it suits us ok. Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Greatly appreciated. Oh, and the idea re the hinged laundry door, we are going to go with that. It makes perfect sense about how it'll get dirty down the side of the glass sliding door etc, and I'll have plenty of other things to clean to keep me busy! Has anyone opted for the hinged door (with upper half glass) to the laundy in lieu of the sliding glass door? Can you remember roughly how much this cost (with CH)? Surely it couldn't be that much (if anything) as the sliding glass door cost would be offset against the hinged door cost anyway. Or so you'd think! Now that you mention about extending the length of the Activity room, as well as the kitchen, it makes perfect sense! What a great idea... and a simple idea. Yet it didn't cross my mind!!! However, the budget is pretty tight now, as were originally building the Westbury 26 and have since changed to the Riverton 30, and paying the difference ourselves (ie. no increase in bank's loan) so we really haven't got the money to extend the house, no matter how much I'd love to! The measurements of the Activity room are 3000mm x 4190mm, so once we relocate the wardrobe it'll only be something like 2400mm x 4190mm. That should be fine, especially if you have the desk built into the nook created by putting bed 3's BIR closer to the inner wall. Re: WHAT UPGRADES/CHANGES SHOULD I DO WITH THE RIVERTON 30? 12Jul 14, 2010 11:17 pm Hi everyone! Does anyone know how much CH will charge to put a wooden hinged door with upper half glass pane in lieu of the glass sliding door to the Laundry? Or... does anyone know how much CH charge for the wooden hinged door with upper half glass pane just on it's own (ie. not in lieu of the sliding glass door)? Are you saying that these consultants are involved at key-points of the building, and perform site inspects at the stages, or only after building is completed to point… 4 9010 That's very helpful, thank you. I was mostly interested in knowing if a spoon drain requires a specific slope, but I appreciate the extra information. 4 3922 i imagine you also have another contract with an architect? and yeah, whatever other's said about special conditions and appendices 16 11148 |
