Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 15, 2010 9:08 pm Dear all, we are almost finish with the construction (final stage), when we realised, there's something different to the bricks above the garage external door. i think, normally, above the front door, there will be steel lintel, which hold the brick above the steel lintel. However, we realised, the lintel here, is between bricks ! that means, above the door, there's bricks, then steel lintel, then another bricks. is this normal? does anyone experience the same as we do ? Picture as attached, i hope someone can point out, if this is incorrect, or this is simply because we don't understand what it should have been (aka: it's normal) Does this happen because, they realised the door is smaller than what it should, when they have already built the bricks... or is this just common and us being too paranoid one more thing we realised, we have ordered clean bricks. (no burnt effect), but somehow, we are getting some bricks, like in the picture, which looks like a bit mouldy and has cracks too... is this normal, or does the builder needs to fix this before the handover? many thanks all for the response given Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Final stage Re: Garage bricks 4Jun 16, 2010 8:43 am Looks strange. I rekon the brick should overhang the frame, too late now I guess. Re: Garage bricks 5Jun 16, 2010 8:47 am borg thats pretty normal in relation to bricks above door. What else can you do??? It is not normal. the error in starting point of brick. brickie should check the door frame height before start brick work and adjust with mortar joint thickness or fisrt caurse of brick to match with lintel. i will not accept this. they can render and paint. Yes your right. However if they adjust the brick gauge and work to the door frame as you suggest then the rest of the house is will be out of wack. You cant line up all doors and windows. Short storey is you cant have everything line up. Not everything is going to work to brick height. Re: Garage bricks 7Jun 16, 2010 9:38 am I would querie your SS about it. I have several doors that do not match the height of the steel lintel, and the gap has been covered in with cement sheet and painted the same as the door and frame. Here are mine to compare: Laundry door: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Front door after bricking showing gap: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Completed front doors with painted infil (can hardly notice!): Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Maybe they put the infil bricks there because it's a steel door frame and can take the weight of a few half bricks without being on the lintel? My garage back door also has a steel frame, but there is no infil on it, the bricks match the height of the frame, so I can't help there! I have not seen this done this way before, must be a reason for it, but check with your SS. Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! In you house it looks like the builder/bricklayer set the gauge to the height of your garage door but because of that your house door heights didn't work out. This was what i was talking about in the previous post. The main reason why it doesn't work out is because you garage door frame doesn't have a seal on the bottom where you house doors do. Hence even if you house is totally design to brick heights with the step downs etc you can never match all doors. Re: Garage bricks 9Jun 16, 2010 11:10 am Thanks Borg, makes perfect sence using the bricks as infill with nothing to nail the cement sheeting/timber to. I just haven't seen it before! Cheers for the explanation! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! (what would you do in this situation before handover? of course, you want your house to look good, not something odd, right?) Final stage Re: Garage bricks 12Jun 22, 2010 12:02 am hey nemisis, when you say it's 5h1t house work, what's the best outcome for this, as i am in the final stage? surely the builder won't be able to redo the garage? is it better to have them plaster above the door? or they need to do a custom size door to fit the door height?
