Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 08, 2010 9:36 pm We're getting close to handover and was wondering if anyone had any info on the quality of the internal cleanup that builders are meant to do before handover. Should windows and other surfaces be cleaned properly or just have stickers and writing removed? Currently our windows are still dirty with dirt streaked all over it from the build. Should floors still have stuff (white paste etc) stuck to it, or should they be smooth? Our concrete floors are currently uneven in many places due to building glues and other substances stuck to it. Should insides of drawers be cleaned of all the dust/sawdust/etc. that builds up during the build. Basically how clean should a house be when a builder does handover? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Re: How clean is a house cleanup by the builder before hando 2Jun 08, 2010 9:55 pm Removing anything with any information about our build. If I was to win Lotto, I would build with a different builder, now to win lotto Re: How clean is a house cleanup by the builder before hando 3Jun 08, 2010 11:17 pm My house was filthy when we got it, i made sure that i wrote on our 'problem sheet' at handover that all windows and mirrors could not be checked because they were dirty. Once we got the house i found that there was a scratch on one of the windows and we have been advised that it will be fixed. If we hadn't lined up all of our trades i wouldn't have signed handover until it was cleaned properly. Make sure they do it properly! Re: How clean is a house cleanup by the builder before hando 4Jun 09, 2010 7:44 am My house had a 'builders clean', and although it was pretty clean, it was by no means 'livable', and definitely NOT the standard of the display! All surfaces, windows, mirrors, toilets and shower screens were cleaned, but because I still had concrete floors, there was still concrete dust around the place (and glue and plaster stuff on the slab). I didn't bother cleaning and unpacking until the flooring was done as that created even more dust with sawing the boards and the quad pieces. Except I could do the upstairs bathrooms where there were tiles! I didn't have to do much at all, but basically went over all flat surfaces again with a damp cloth and all the insides of the drawers before putting stuff away. The tiled areas were pretty good and I didn't have much grout residue to clean off (just concrete dust from footprints!), so I just gave the them the once over too. Even though the toilets were clean, I disinfected them too! My house was also at the same standard for our PCI, and was able to see any scratches on windows and mirrors etc....there were none as they had already been replaced! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... We were unable to check our windows during PCI as they were too dirty - we noted them down to be checked at the pre-handover inspection. Sounds like we will get what Stormy got as we were told it will be a builder's clean. It's good to know what to expect though, so thanks again Re: How clean is a house cleanup by the builder before hando 6Jun 09, 2010 12:22 pm My first house was reasonably clean, although it still had the glues, plaster drips, etc on the slab. My parents are floorlayers and perfectionists, so they arditted the entire floor and sanded everything to get a completely flat surface, so after that the house was a complete mess and there was a lot of cleaning to do!!! Thankfully my parents stuck around long enough to help clean and get me moved in after they'd finished doing my floors I think it's more important to be clean enough to see any problems. Anything after that and it's probably just going to get dusty and dirty again as you do carpets and finishes. If your house comes fully decked out with all flooring and such, I would expect it to be cleaned to a standard where you could just move in. Re: How clean is a house cleanup by the builder before hando 7Jun 10, 2010 12:14 am That's what we want to make sure of - that it is clean enough that we can properly check the windows and mirrors, etc. We fully expect to have to clean before/during moving in.
