Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 10, 2013 11:46 am Hi was hoping someone might be able to help with some stone/laminate questions. We are currently designing the kitchen for our new house and I'm trying to figure out the most cost effective size for our island bench. I wanted a deep bench but a sales rep told me not to go past 900mm in depth unless you're going to 1450ish, because you would be "wasting" the rest of the slab. I didnt understand what he meant at the time, but now I've read that stone cuts are 3060x1500 I assume this is so it leaves the balance of the slab (600mm) for your other bench top. Is that right? He also said if you go past 900mm you would need to have a waterfall edge? Does anyone know if that would be still be true if you had 900mm of cupboards underneath (600 on kitchen side, 300 on lounge side and 300 overhang)? Also, we may decide to stick with the basic laminex depending how our budget goes. Does anyone know what size sheets laminex comes in? So what would be the width and depth you can go in laminate before you have joins or wastage? Hope someone on here can help, thanks Re: Island Bench Length/Width 2Nov 10, 2013 11:57 am I'd go the bigger the better. So long as it fits the kitchen. Also - by "the other bench" - if you mean the bench on the wall - why does it have to be stone too ? It could match cupboards/splashback etc. I don't like those longer - skinny - ones. Re: Island Bench Length/Width 3Nov 10, 2013 11:54 pm Our bench is 1m wide and we don't have waterfalls, our plan meant we couldn't really go wider. With essa stone the island will only be 80cm wide which is why we paid for a second piece of stone for the island and we used the stone that would have been our island for our bathrooms. Not sure how wide laminex can be... Re: Island Bench Length/Width 4Nov 11, 2013 6:54 am I was told that a slab of caesarstone is 1400mm. The standard bench for our house was 810mm wide. We made it 1200mm wide with waterfall ends and it is perfect, I would not have wanted it to be any narrower. It is 3000mm long - the full length of a slab of caesarstone.
