Browse Forums Building A New House Re: SunshineT's Build: window dressings freaking me out 2924Jul 29, 2012 2:13 pm I just ran the vacuum cleaner on them. Turn them one way then the other, easy as. We didn't have them in bathrooms though. My neighbour used to hang them on the clothes line and hose them down! Re: SunshineT's Build: window dressings freaking me out 2925Jul 29, 2012 2:32 pm build again just had a quick 'stalk' at your bathrooms sunshineT- love a lot!!! Thanks build again. Welcome to my thread! Ryan 1977 weren't you worried DH would watch even more sport? Ryan - that might have been me!!! I think Jodge's venetian's look great, and are a great alternative to shutters. Even if just for the first few years till you save up more money? You should definitely get a heavy sunblock blind or drape for your Western windows - or maybe an external awning or something... weren't you thinking about pergola? As for hijacking... no worries, but see, this is why we have all been encouraging you to start your own thread! gogo65 T, together an idea of price, go online to a few of the online companies, they give you an instant quote, I think you'll find the custom blinds aren't to expensive. As you know we are getting our blinds through our neighbor, Vess has done a fair bit of research and got some quotes, so might be able to help. Nina chose accent I think, she was also very happy with the price etc. I can pm you Scott's details, although I have given him the go ahead to do my blinds I don't have any prices, so can't give you an indication of cost. We are going white blinds everywhere, white sunscreen in the back living area, including the stacker door, the fabric seems like it will be easy to clean. In the bedrooms and front living we are doing a charcoal grey sunscreen and a white blockout, so it looks consistent from the street, I'm one for everything looking the same from the front. You can have a look at mine when I get them. gogo - this was extremely useful. Rocketship this morning pointed me in the direction of blinds online (which nina mentioned on Friday but I didn't quite realise that was the actual company name). Interesting your mix of sunscreen and block-out. DH and I were just this morning talking about doing some non-white, and likely to be a grey or charcoal of somesort. So very interested in yours. Good reminder about consistency from the front. Tricky thing for us is we have two bathrooms (which have the bubbly glass), kitchen which I don't think I will cover, then it is just the study and stairwell (which is a major fish bowl). Clearly I need to do some more research. uuggh, and I thought my research was just about over. MHC We are using StyleHouse - based in Kellyville for plantation shutters (very competitve price). Yet to decide what to use on the sliding doors. Jo has suggested I look at the "Sheer Elegance" range as well as other blind options & has suggested it is better to see all options in person rather than on the web...just have not had time to do this yet. They also supply blinds & curtains too. Husband & wife team....will come to you as most do. They get most of their work via word of mouth. MHC Thanks MHC. Would you mind PMing me their details? JohnnyD Yes it's all coming together beautifully T. . .love that niche tile Thanks Loretta. Nice to see you pop in again. willcres Great color choice, T!! It's all coming together.... Cheers willcres. Rather daunting all these choices! purple2fish WOw those granite tiles look very luxurious!! Thanks purplefish. Someone else described the tiles as glam, and combined with luxurious, I can assure you we are absolutely neither of those!! It makes me a laugh a bit. We have been very lucky with how it has turned out. kiwi You could get off the rack and sew some nice silk on the bottom, so 2 toned Save you $$$$ Just for now.....change the deco in a few yrs with custom made then aaaah, yes. Kiwi. Ever a fountain of wonderful wise suggestions. For my granny's reno. greenfish Wowsers T looking so fabulous!! I really like the square on the balustrade, I know this is not what you were originally after but it looks quite classy. The tiles of course look brilliant, your build has really come on in the last few weeks it's so exciting! Loving your choices, can't wait to see more... thanks GF. Yeah, the square balustrades are growing on me... Just need to make some additions to the house with some 'softness'. We have a lot of contrasts and strong visuals, so trying to return to safe and comfortable to the eye now with the window dressings! It is all so hard!!! Look fab but cleaning them is a major pain in the buttski. T - the only white blinds we have gone is in the living room. I've really mixed the colours around for something different. Our house from the outside will look pretty weird, but with my frontage being long, it can't be helped - there are rooms that require drapes and others that can't have them. Oh well. They will mainly be drawn at night anyway. During the summer days people can just be dazzled by the length of the house so hopefully won't notice the mismatched window coverage Re: SunshineT's Build: window dressings freaking me out 2928Jul 29, 2012 3:05 pm http://Www.blindsonline.com.au I've already got a few samples if you need any T....although you can get 10 for free.... And I've decided I'm off to spotlight for standard rollers for DD's, the spare and my bedrooms...bargain prices (sale on at mo) so they'll do for now. Maybe even for our ensuite and WIR too. Some sort of neutral colour - nothing bold, you know me!! They look fab, very contemporary and stylish. The ones we have in the bathroom are a pain, because of the moisture, but the dry areas are ok. I'm working my way up to cleaning them. . . Next year maybe? Re: SunshineT's Build: window dressings freaking me out 2931Jul 29, 2012 4:11 pm jodge Clean? Who cleans? Absolutely not us! Which is why we have grey tiles in the shower, were keen on round balustrade poles, trying to avoid white blinds etc. nina marie I've already got a few samples if you need any T....although you can get 10 for free.... Some sort of neutral colour - nothing bold, you know me!! Yes please Nina!! I left a message on your mobile. We were at Spotlight today too - how funny if we had seen you there. We are trying to get standard rollers too (30% discount), just made a mistake with the stone colour. Totally confused by colours, so borrowing your samples (then we will get 10 more from blinds online) will hopefully help our decision making. greenfish I have wooden venetians in the kitchen. Look fab but cleaning them is a major pain in the buttski. You have given me an idea!! I went back to site earlier and was looking at it from the street. And sure enough, it was obvious to me that 1. white blinds definitely would not suit our dark external colour scheme and that 2. timber venetians would actually look great. Of course I came home to tell DH and he was not at all keen. Cleaning them being a number one concern!! do we sound at all obsessed with low maintenance?!?!? They're having a sale too, buy 1 shutter get the other half price... A friend of mine used them and happy. jodge Clean? Who cleans? I hate cleaning.... Lucky DH does most of them.... Re: SunshineT's Build: window dressings freaking me out 2933Jul 29, 2012 5:28 pm Hey T, My blinds were done by Accent and they are made from some type of resin so they are easy to clean, can go in the bathroom yet they look OK, possibly the same as jodge has. Mine are a soft white but I’m pretty sure they had plastic woodeny ones as an option. I went to their showroom and they quoted me off the plan but they did a proper measure when we got the keys and the cost was around $1850 for 12 including install. I also had 2 panel blinds made for the sliding doors and they cost $2k. I agree that a darker colour would be more appropriate than white, maybe they have a colour that blends in with your render? Regards, Grumbles Re: SunshineT's Build: window dressings freaking me out 2934Jul 29, 2012 8:38 pm Thanks GB ... yeah, I am thinking for externals either timber venetians or a darker blinds in a shade of Woodlands Grey if possible... So this is where I am up to: totally overwhelmed by choice! I have spent a while on blindsonline today - an excellent online blinds service, with heaps of fabric selections and styles, and very reasonable price... But there are so many husband and wife businesses out there or solo operators it seems, that I like the idea of giving my mullah to someone direct. Like with our front door. The plan therefore is to get pricing online, but also meet a few smaller operators and get quotes. This all takes time and I am feeling overwhelmed by research at the moment (still haven't got lights or door handles finalised), so am now thinking about whether we can move in without window coverings, so we can live in the house for a week or so (before we go away for two weeks anyway), and put the order in just before we go away. That way I can really have a look at the colours and styles while in the house. In the meantime, will be ordering 10 samples from blindsonline and hopefully borrowing nina's too! Lots of natural light which I love (and I'm noticing that our new home seems to lack a bit of this!) I also love the bathroom colours. Very nice. Our building thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53911 Re: SunshineT's Build: window dressings freaking me out 2936Jul 29, 2012 11:38 pm I know it’s been a long day for you so I did this with gogo’s bin, I don’t think she will mind, do you get it now? I hope you specified you wanted yours attached to the door and these aren’t the same as mine either. http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s507/grumblebum54/bins.jpg I recommend you have the blind people to your house, that’s what I did. When he put the samples against the paint the right colour was evident immediately. I don’t want you to feel too overwhelmed with what you have left to do but with this build I allowed 8 weeks extra rent in the budget after we collected the keys. During those weeks I had organized for the wooden floors to be polished, carpets, blinds, extra tiling, clothesline, lighting, fans, extra electrical, split air-cons x 2, alarm, fly screens, screen door, pet door, alfresco screens, TV aerial, phone connection, driveway, concrete paths, retaining walls, landscaping, fencing, mailbox, garden shed, vent kit for dryer, garage floor sealer, pest control and removalist. Have fun!! Regards, Grumbles Re: SunshineT's Build: window dressings freaking me out 2937Jul 30, 2012 10:19 am I'm loving the way your house is coming together too It didn't occur to me that ready made curtains don't come in 2400 lengths, and my thoughts were the same as Kiwi - add on a contrast to the bottom until ready for permanent ones. We only have one window at 2400 (but a big one - over 4m) and the stacker door is 2400 but I have no idea what to put on that yet. They are on a corner next to each other so the covering needs to look reasonably matching. We had Spotlight timber venetians in our kids bedrooms previously which looked smart although over the years the backs faded a bit with the sun. There is a tool you can buy which looks like 5 fluffy fingers and it can be run along the slats to remove dust. I do like the idea of turning them one way and then the other to run over them with the vacuum though. I only cleaned them when it looked like there was a fair bit of dust on them, maybe once a quarter. I will most likely get them for the bedrooms again. Vertical blinds don't seem to be popular these days but I quite like them. I don't think I would have them with very small children but we had verticals in our family room at our old house, they were very easy to clean, (sort of vinyl covered I think) and sat inside the window frame so a pelmet could also be used. The only time they got a bit damaged was when our budgie took to chewing the edge of them and they frayed a little We also have them in the rental but the chain on the bottom has come off on most of them which is why I wouldn't have them with very small children. Otherwise they are still in good condition and I am guessing about 15 years old. https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43937&start=0 Bought a block in Golden Grove - Jan 2011 Finally finished our design, Mar 2012, *yay* Signed with ADH council consent June 12 Re: SunshineT's Build: window dressings freaking me out 2938Jul 30, 2012 11:48 am Just to add to that re the curtains..I know granny! But to add length the best way is not the bottom ( I remembered after writing that) because it has a hem etc and mine would never be as neat, but to cut it in the middle or 3/4 or 1/4 down wherever and put a strip of fabric in there..and sew each seam up. No mucking around with hems etc. Just a nice line of contrasting fabric, people will think they were especially made., and they were....by you! Ok, rest my case re the curtains, but if you ever have a rental...cheap way of doing it. ( won't comment on the daggy verticals...sorry, did daggy come out...) Re: SunshineT's Build: window dressings freaking me out 2939Jul 30, 2012 11:54 am Hey T timber venetians would look great from the outside for sure. I had one of those fluffy finger things to clean, may work ok for other rooms but def not for kitchen, and you still have to manually do the bits between the strings anyway. I find a cloth in warm water works best, but yeah kitchen tends to get a lot messier. We used a local curtain company, they were cheaper and also a lot better to deal with - and they are quicker too. Came straight out to measure up, one big name company wanted me to wait 3 weeks to measure up just for a quote! at kiwi. I'm not a vertical fan either. You get them now without string at the bottom though if that is what you are after. Re: SunshineT's Build: window dressings freaking me out 2940Jul 30, 2012 12:12 pm T, I had a timber venetian in my kitchen for several years, & never found it got very dirty & my range hood wasn't the best.
